Adam mentioned to start the planning for a cruise to Oceana for the Air Show in its own thread. So I jumped to it.
So the event starts October 17th thru the 18th.
Here is the link to the Event:

The air show looks like it would be a lot of fun. Linda and I are going to try to make it to the show. It would be great for all of us to hook up and cruise in together.

Yes! I know. I was thinking for the northern virginia guys is to possibly meet up in Mechanisville somewhere and cruise to Oceana from there, it's right on the way.

It'd be really fun. I dont know how to ask but how is everybody elses schedual for that weekend. I would like to take a poll on which dwould work better, Saturday or Sunday. And i also need to hear back from Justanotheruser. He brought up that he lives down there and figure something out for when we get down there. Possibly meet up with him and follow him in or see if he wants to come up to a good meeting spot for all of us to join up. :)

Boy, I step away from the Z for a few days and just look at what all is happening! Yes, I live 3.8 miles (according to google maps) from the gate of Oceana and 1.2 miles from the oceanfront/boardwalk. I am happy to be the local contact and 'point man'. As I don't work weekends and I live right here, any day or both days work just fine for me. So, for the folks that are traveling, I guess we need to find out what day works best for the majority. I can point you in the direction of hotels if you want to make it a weekend event. Check the schedule on the air show site and then let me know if you want to arrive early enough for a breakfast or a lunch before the show, or catch dinner after (probably the best bet). And if you would want to do a cruise aside from the show. The traffic can be a bit nuts, but I'm sure we would be a big hit with a long parade of Challengers down the Atlantic Ave strip at the oceanfront area! There are sometimes car gatherings in local shopping centers on Saturday nights, I can put my ear to the ground to see if any are around that weekend. Or we could just roll up in a parking lot and make our own! Anyway, let me know what I can do to help.

That sounds great! I'm pretty go for anytime myself. gotta see what everybody else up north wants to do. I'd like to have a line a challengers driving down to va beach. Any way we could possibly meet you down there? (justanotheruser - i dont remember your name im really sorry) im not very farmiliar with the area still!

No prob, I'm Bryan. And I figure we could pick a time that works for everyone (this depends on the travelers) and meet in one of the large parking lots for some 'meet and greet' while everyone arrives, and then take a short Challenger convoy over to the base for the show.

Well for us Northern, VA folks, if we wanted to cruise down together, we'd have to leave real early if we all go to the saturday show to get down there in time. Otherwise, we could could cruise down saturday afternoon (after weekend traffic heading south) and plan on going to the show sunday. (That is if the northern va folks want to caravan down together.) Otherwise we can make our own plans for getting down there and pick a meet up spot to cruise to the show itself. Either day works for me!

Hello Bryan!
And yes that makes sense for us NOVA travelers, I shouldnt ever become an early morning driver. we'll see what everyone else has to say.
BigSlamu
08-17-2009, 09:42 PM
I think that it makes the most sense for us to go to the Sunday show. It would be pretty tough for us NOVA folks to leave early enough on Saturday to hook up and ride in together for the show. It also would not be much better to try to leave after work on Friday and stay in VAB overnight to hook up on Saturday. I think the best way for the NOVA folks would be to head down on Saturday, get everyone together for dinner Saturday night and roll into the show together on Sunday. Hotels should be rather cheap since it would be off season. We could try to get a group rate somewhere as well.

We went to that show a couple of years ago. It's an awesome show! If you want a treat the $60 for getting in the Executive Squadron Chalet is worth every penny. They cater lunch and snacks all your drinks are free including beer. The food was very good and they have shade and good seats.

I was actually eyeing those! But as some people will probably want to travel and get a hotel room already, the cost could get prohibitive. I was wondering if we should commit at least to the $14 reserved seats so we could sit as a group.
I'm guessing that there will be some people that travel down Saturday and get a room, and some that will just get up early and travel Sunday and head back after.
I guess first step to get this rolling is find out who is coming. I have the impression that Sunday is the best day for the show, but there will probably be some 'meeting and greeting', dinner, etc. for early arrivals on Saturday. So far, the list appears to be:

So anyone that I have listed that wants to be removed, and anyone that hasn't posted up yet that may go, please let me know. And spread the word to your fellow Z members!! Once we have a list, and then from that list find out what everyone's travel plans are, we can get the details in order about meeting, dining, etc.
I would think one of the travel sites such as Orbitz or Travelocity would be a good resource for comparing room rates. Rates should be a bit cheaper as it's at the end of the season, and probably your location relative to the ocean front will make a difference also. Another source for hotels at the oceanfront/boardwalk can be found here (don't miss the ones listed on the right site of the page):
http://www.virginiabeach.com/hotels
And once again, if there is any information I can provide or anything I can do to help, please let me know. Thanks!

The rates are one of the reasons why this hotel jumped out at me. They range from $42.92 to $68.39 that weekend. That's pretty damn cheap for a three star hotel on the beach. However, I have not stayed at this hotel so I am relying on what I can find on the net.

Since the $14 are numbered seats we would have to purchase them at the same time to make sure that we are all sitting together. We will have to work something out once we have a good idea how many people are going.

Exactly! We need to get commitments and actual numbers to work with. Then we can pitch hotels for group rates (I can volunteer to either call or go lobby-hopping once we have the number of rooms we are going to commit to), and we can also place a buy on the seats at one time so that we can get them in a group. So get the word out and get some people making their commitments so we can get the groundwork set!
I am familiar with that Best Western (well, most of the oceanfront hotels), but I have not stayed there. I'll take a self-guided tour on my next bike trek down to the boardwalk and post back. Maybe I'll swing by the desk and see what their initial reaction is to giving group rate pricing.

Ok, I should have just took BigSlamu's word and saved myself a lot of running around! I popped into several hotels up and down the boardwalk, that Best Western (near 29th St) was the best price. Double occupancy for Oct 17 is $67.49. The next cheapest was Surfside Inn at 13th St coming in at $81.07. The others I went into were all in the $124-$135 range. My first impression of the Best Western when I walked in was 'blue'. The inside is very blue - carpet, furniture, accenting... But it did look clean, comforatable and well-kept. I peeked inside a room that was being cleaned, look to be in good shape and comfortable. And they have an indoor pool and all rooms are oceanfront with a balcony, so you can sit outside and watch the ocean. It lacks the extra 'style and class' atmosphere that some of the more expensive places have, but it isn't like the worst places on the boardwalk (and 'worst' on the boardwalk really isn't very bad at all). I would call it middle of the ground, and I would have no issues staying there, especially for that price!
The Surfside Inn for $81.07 had a bit more of a classy feel to it. There were fish tanks and a big beautiful stone fountain in the stone-floored lobby, but I didn't get to sneak a peek at any rooms there.
I asked all of them about group rates, some gave me a card and told me I had to call their group sales rep/dept, the others all said group rates are only available if it's 10 or more rooms. So I'll have to wait until we have have a better idea of who's wanting to get a room.
A little story on a side note, I went to go into the Atlantic Sands near 13th St, and as I walked up there was a fire truck and ambulance with the lights on out front. I thought 'I hope it's nothing serious' and walked into the lobby to find someone on the floor behind the check-in desk with the paramedics all around. I spun around and walked back out. I've now had 2 experiences with this particular hotel: Last year our bikes were stolen from the bike rack attached to the side of this hotel (they cut the cable locks right off - go with u-clamp locks!!) and now this today. It looks like a decent enough hotel, but needless to say, I get bad Ju-Ju from it, stay way, I think it's cursed!!
Let me know if there's anything else I can check out or information I can try to get my hands on. And keep spreading the word!!

I just checked with the Best Western and they do not have any rooms with King Size beds available on October 17th. They were available last week when I looked at rates but they are sold out now. I went ahead and booked a room with two double beds for $60.74 per night.

Thanks for that info! I just discussed 'double occupancy', we didn't get into the bed arrangement, or how many rooms were currently available, I didn't think to ask. It doesn't look like we are going to make the 10-room number the way we are going as many people are fairly local, so it's probably best to book 'em while you can if you want a room!

Okay so it was mentioned earlier in the thread to meet in Mechanicsville on the way down there. NOVA folks, do you guys want to meet at one of the gas stations in Woodbridge so we can gas up and hop on 95 together? They usually have slightly cheaper gas down there anyway. Then we can roll down to M-ville, meet the folks there and continue on down to the beach as a big Challenger caravan! :Racing:
Peelin, we still planning on going to your buddies house? If so, what time would work for him, so we can pan accordingly on when to hit the road.
Also, is everyone still looking at getting the $14 tickets? If so, we should try and make a cut off date for deciding so we can buy tickets and make sure we're all sitting together.

I thought the plan was for us more Northern VA folks to drive down Saturday afternoon, and were going to the Sunday show. Right?
So where is everyone meeting?

So where is everyone meeting?
Well, since some or all of the Saturday arrival folks are interested in taking a convoy with Peelin' out to the 71 Plum, I guess he'll need to come along and give us some direction as to when and where.
On Sunday, I propose meeting in the parking lot of the K-Mart on First Colonial Rd (550 First Colonial Rd, VA Beach 23451) at 8:30-9am-ish and take the approx 4-5 mile convoy from there over to the base. Flying starts at 10am.
Of course, I'm open to suggestions. This has to work for all of you folks that are travelling so let me know what's good and what's not!

Also, is everyone still looking at getting the $14 tickets? If so, we should try and make a cut off date for deciding so we can buy tickets and make sure we're all sitting together.
If we want to sit together we will have to make a group purchase. Do you have a paypal account so that everyone can send money for the tickets? Paypal would probably be the easiest way to handle to money.

So where is everyone meeting?
Well for those of us in Northern, Northern VA I had suggested to meet at one of the gas stations up here in Woodbridge so we could jump on 95 together, then I guess we could hop off at the exit of your choice and pick you up, then head down to the 295 split and take that around to Mechanicsville, then down to the beach? Sound like a tentative plan?
Still need to figure out what time we want to hit the road up here, based on when we all want to meet up down there on Saturday afternoon.

And I haven't heard from anyone about buying the seating tickets. I'm thinking maybe we'll just end up wandering around rather than getting seats?
I'm thinking this may just be the best route as well for tickets, since folks may join up last minute. Plus if the weather ends up not being nice or something, then we can jut mingle around the cars

That might actually work out perfectly, since it looks like 'JustNick' is down your way in Fredericksburg. So we could plan on getting off at exit 130 and meeting you guys at a spot of your choosing, say a little hello and hit the road again with the Challenger Caravan!!

Yep, still 130. You would take it towards Culpeper. Stay in the right lane of the exit, Central Park is on your right. Take the right (at the first light) onto Carl D Silver Pkwy. Make a left at the first light you come to on the Parkway, Target will be on your left.

Oh no! Your buddy should just hide a house key under the mat for ya or something. But tourist season is over, the boardwalk was nearly empty this past weekend so I know there must be rooms available. My house is full-up or I'd offer a room. I have a buddy coming in from out of town that wants to check out the air show and the Challengers. If there is anything I can do to help out, please let me know!

Thanks very much for the offer on the help! :) I actually just grabbed a room at the Seagull Hotel/Motel whatever it is. $57 including tax for the night, not too shabby. Couldn't get one at the Best Western, but they're like a block apart from each other so that worked out well.
I guess I can offer up my room to anyone else who is still looking for a place to crash as well (room for 1 other person.) This one hit me almost last minute, so I figured I had better grab a room before it really was too late!

After the out of town folks are checked into their hotels on Saturday afternoon / evening, would anyone be interested in meeting and attending some of the local car club gatherings?
There are 2 large gatherings every Saturday (weather permitting). The first one is in Virginia Beach from approx. 3pm-7pm. The second is in Newport News from approx. 8pm-whenever. Both gatherings usually have good turnouts. We could also grab dinner in between the two.
If anyone is interested, feel free to let me know and we'll make arrangements to meet somewhere.:D

Our game plan for Sunday seems locked in: 8:30am @ Super Kmart, 550 First Colonial Road, then head over to the air show.
As far as Saturday goes, I was thinking perhaps we can meet at the Best Western hotel since this is where most of the out of town folks will be staying. As far as a meeting time goes, how does 4:00pm sound? It gives the out of town folks plenty of time to drive down & check into their rooms, then we can head to the cruise-in. The rest of the evening would be free for us to do whatever we want.
I was just thinking out loud about the game plan on Saturday, we can adjust it if it isn't convenient for everyone.

Ok, this thread has more twists and turns than a country road. Let's see if we can sort it out:
Saturday:
NoVA folks are meeting at a gas station in Woodbridge to head out together onto 95. what station at what time?
NoVA folks then caravan on 95 to exit 130 in Fredericksburg to meet the F-burg folks at Target at Central Park. ETA?
All Northern folks roll into town to get checked in. Interested locals and out-of-towners will gather at the Best Western at the oceanfront at at 4:30. The plan is to head to the Jenroe's cruise-in and grab a bite to eat.
Sunday:
Everyone meets at the K-Mart parking lot on First Colonial at 8:30am. From there, we cruise over to Oceana.

ETA?
NoVA folks are meeting at a gas station in Woodbridge to head out together onto 95. Exxon Mobil (right before the entrance to 95south), let's say meet time of 11:15, try and roll out by 11:30.
NoVA folks then caravan on 95 to exit 130 in Fredericksburg to meet the F-burg folks at Target at Central Park. Roughly 12:15-12:30 (might depend on traffic)
Thanks for writing up the re-cap!

This should be a great weekend! The rain that is here now is supposed to clear out by the weekend, but it is going to be very chilly so bring warm clothes. I think Peelin' already mentioned this, still calling for 50's-60's.

First, my apologies. I promised that I would declare my intentions on whether or not to participate and I failed to provide a timely RSVP. I will not be able to join you all in this road trip to Oceana NAS. I will be driving down to SE VA (Williamsburg) on the following weekend.
Second, I would be excited to meet the NoVa participants at the assembly point in Woodbridge at 1115 this Saturday and see you all off.
To confirm the address - the assembly point for the NoVa people is the Exxon station at/near the intersection of Gordon Blvd and Devils Reach Rd near the old Hechinger's commuter lot. Is this correct?
I guess I'll act as the "Assembly Ship" (see photo with definition).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/02/First_Sergeant_B-24D_Assembly_Ship_or_Judas_Goat.jpg/180px-First_Sergeant_B-24D_Assembly_Ship_or_Judas_Goat.jpg (http://www.challengerforumz.com/wiki/File:First_Sergeant_B-24D_Assembly_Ship_or_Judas_Goat.jpg)
An assembly ship was a war-weary WWII bomber used to assemble large bomber formations. Once the formation was formed up, this aircraft returned to base.
See you,

Hello I'm a new guy, I live here at the beach, I just bought a 09 SRT8 in July, done a few things to it. Carbon Fiber CAI, Ram Air Kit, and a Chrome Tee Handle Shifter. Just found the site today, looking forward in having fun. I also own a 03 1500 custum Quad 4x4 and the wife has a 06 SRT8 Charger. We are a MOPAR family. HA!HA!

Tim, sorry you won't be able to join us anymore, but hope you have a good trip down to Williamsburg!
That would be real cool of you to show up and send us off though! Plus it's always nice to meet other local Challenger owners, esp Z members! It looks though that it might only be myself and Blubyeu meeting up to head out down to Fredericksburg. Don't know if you want to come out for just the two of us, but I'll make sure she and I are at the Exxon (and yes, you're right about the location of it) around 11:15 or so. If you can't come out, that's totally understandable as well. :)

What a great group of people! I had a ton of fun meeting everyone today. And driving that huge line of Challengers (and one 300) from the beach out to Jenroe's was awesome! Even if it was cold and crappy and the only other cars that showed up was a Mustang (a very nice one) and a 'Vette... we made our own show and drew lots of attention. On 264, driving in the middle of the line, I could see Challengers in front of me and in my review mirror for as far as the eye could see in both directions - awesome!!! I'm looking forward to meeting up in the morning for the Air Show. If any one else is in the area, the more the merrier! 8:30am at K-Mart on First Colonial.
Here's a few teaser pics... the folks with the good cameras should be posting up some really great pics when they get back home after the weekend.

Linda and I want to thank everyone for helping to make the cruise to Oceana so much fun. We had a blast even with the crappy weather. We stayed in Vrginia Beach until Monday and of course the weather was beautiful when we left. We drove to Westmoreland State Park on Monday and stayed in a cabin for a couple of days. It was very nice and quiet there. Lots of deer, owls and rabbits. On the way to Westmoreland, as we were getting ready to enter the Hampton Roads Tunnel, we saw a submarine heading out to sea. That was cool. I did not get a picture however. That was the first time that I had seen a sub in the water.
