General Information

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright engineered the building of this bank which was constructed in 1905. It originally housed the real estate office and bank of Frank L. Smith, a prominent local citizen, U.S. Congressman and Senator. It is the only one of the three banks Wright designed still standing. It was expanded in 1970 and again in 1989. The general structure has not changed and the original woodwork has been kept intact.

The Prairie Style horizontal massing of the bank was reinforced by the rustic Bedford limestone blocks and the deeply recessed horizontal windows. When the bank was modernized after the Second World War some of the Wright detailing was covered or removed on the interior. In the 1960’s the bank chose to restore the building back to the Wright era and detailing.
