General Information
The Kankakee River takes a leisurely path from its origin to a point near Wilmington, Illinois, where it joins the DesPlaines River to form the Illinois River. It has long been acclaimed as one of the cleanest rivers in the Midwest. The Kankakee River is one of the few natural and unspoiled canoeing streams in the northern half of Illinois, providing excellent fishing and an outstanding opportunity for observing many types of birds and other wildlife. Even if you don't have a boat, there are plenty of great roads that follow the river going both north and south that provide numerous opportunities for sightseeing and photos.
