I have a 2012 RT 5.7. Went to the dealer for an oil change and they said I need a 30k tune up at a cost of almost $400. I asked them why so much and they said they had to take off the manifold to reach the plugs. Is this true? Anyone did their own tune up? Any tips or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Manifold does not need to be removed to change the plugs. Cost of the plugs are usually $80 to $90 (16 of them). These plugs are very easy to get to on these engines, can be swapped in about an hour.

Just the plugs. Use di-electric grease where the boot goes on the plug and also a dab of never seize on the plug threads. The plugs need to be torqued also. Be sure not to over tighten them (I forgot what the torque is).

Edit: Looks like 13 ft.lbs.

FYI, when I was talked into the 30K miles service by the dealer on my '12 R/T it was about $300 (I know, too much) but they did more than plugs. They also did a complete cleaning of the intake and throttle body as well as replace the PCV valve. I watched the guy through the glass do all these things. That is still too much money for the service. I'll have to do it myself next time.

The intake manifold does need to come off to change plugs on the V6 - not the V8's.
The 'spark plug wire' is an integral part of the coil pack. You only change that if the coil pack goes bad or you damage the boot somehow.
