Guidance for Mopar Hemi engine owners

Oil grades and use. If you have the MDS system, be sure to use 5W20 oil, even though some dealers may use bulk 10W30 or even 10W40. You need to use the right oil. If the owner’s manual says something else, follow its advice - but don’t be convinced by a mechanic or oil-change place. Insist on the right grade and if they don’t use it...get a refund and go somewhere else.
A technical service bulletin (TSB) - 09-015-04 and 09-013-04 - says: “Vehicles with the Multiple Displacement System must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the MDS.” Watch the mechanic pour it in! (This is said to be the real reason BMW provides free oil changes.)

Owners manuals for R/T and warnings.

MDS System oil requirement and warnings.

2010 Challenger R/T (5.7L) Owner's Manual (pgs. 372-373)

Engine Oil Viscosity (SAE Grade) — 5.7L Engine
SAE 5W-20 engine oil is recommended for all operating temperatures.
This engine oil improves low temperature starting and vehicle fuel economy.

The engine oil filler cap also shows the recommended engine oil viscosity
for your engine. For information on engine oil filler cap location, refer to
“Engine Compartment” in this section.

NOTE: Vehicles equipped with a 5.7L engine must use SAE 5W-20 oil.
Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the Multi-Displacement System (MDS).
Refer to “Multi-Displacement System” under “Starting and Operating” for more details.
Lubricants that do not have both, the engine oil certification mark and the correct SAE
viscosity grade number should not be used.

Synthetic Engine Oils
You may use synthetic engine oils provided the recommended oil quality requirements
are met, and the recommended maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed.

Materials Added to Engine Oil

Do not add any supplemental materials, other than leak detection dyes, to the engine oil.
Engine oil is an engineered product and its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives.

2009 Challenger R/T (5.7L) Owner's Manual:

Although MDS (Multiple Displacement System) is not specifically mentioned in the
2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Owner's manual, the specification for engine oil is clearly
listed in the Fluids and Lubricants Chapter 7 (pg. 409) as well as being clearly stamped
on your oil filler cap.

So when in doubt, you can check the labeling on the engine oil filler cap.

Pay particular attention the the statement above in Latenite1's post about not adding supplements to your oil and another tip don't use a fuel supplement/ cleaner that contains alcohol, you are already getting ethanol in your gas and don't need any additional.

The engine lubrication requirements remain the same, MDS/VVT on or off.
5W20 is used for several reasons - but primarily for efficiency (read fuel mileage).

Automatic 5.7’s sold in North America (not sure what year started). Not sure if those sold across the pond have the same.

That is true, Manual Transmission Challenger DO NOT have MDS.
