I was reading through the the thread Carl posted the other day about high mileage Challengers, and hearing Dino mopar man say he he had that many miles on the stock clutch got me wondering. Has anyone had to replace their clutch? If so, how many miles did you have? Do you race your car? Do you do burnouts, whats your driving style?

I'm at 59,000 miles and my clutch is still fine. I've done plenty of burnouts and made about 10-12 passes down the 1/4 mile for fun over the last few years, but outside of that I'm pretty easy on the clutch.

I read on a thread somewhere a while back where someone had to replace their clutch and it was around $1K to do I think at the dealership. Not sure why the guy had to replace it though, maybe excessive hotrodding or something haha!

In 2010 I decided to get the Auto because back then the price of a clutch replacement was $1500 and I am Hell on clutches. It's not to far fetched to believe that it's gone up since then. Back in the day I used to eat a throw out bearing like it was a snack food and for some silly reason it seemed like the fan belt wanted to go right along with it. Strange. To hear cdahl383 say he's gone 59K and things look good is a dream to me. Enjoy the Journey! Lou.

DinoMoparMan on here has 176,000 miles on his Challenger R/T and still has the original clutch. So they can last a long time if you're not too hard on them. I'm assuming most of his miles are highway miles which would be easier on it too.

Maybe you're right, could be more like $1,500+. Still, even if you only get 100,000 miles out of it, $1,500 for every 100,000 miles isn't bad. Or if you're like DinoMoparMan you're at 175,000+ miles and still haven't replaced it yet which is really cool!

At some point an automatic transmission would fail as well and need a rebuild if you kept the car long enough with enough miles on it, so I think in the long run it's not all that much different. I never even thought of that when I bought my car, I just test drove it and fell in love with it and said where do I sign? Haha!

My only requirements when I bought my Challenger were that it have a hemi and the 6 speed. That's it. LOL. I was just curious as to how the clutches hold up under abuse over time. I know alot of guys here go to the track, and are probably pretty hard on them. I know the dual disc clutches are supposed to hold up better under the power our cars push out as well. Do the 6.4's and 5.7's share the same clutch?

Good question, not sure on that one, gives me something to do some research on later tonight haha! I would think they are the same clutch so the Tremecs would all interchange into every trim level (R/T, R/T Scat Pack, SRT, etc) but can't say I know that for sure.

Remember... the new 8 speed Automatic is a $1,995 additional cost.... rebuild... lol... might be 5-6k! Clutch is gonna be cheaper no matter how you look at it.

Actually it's only about $500 additional cost on the R/T Scat Packs because the auto's avoid the gas guzzler tax while the 6 speeds are cheaper but incur the gas guzzler tax.

On the 5.7L R/T's I think it is a $1,400 increase because there is no gas guzzler tax on those, auto or stick.

Either way the 6 speed could be cheaper in the long run if you were easy on the clutch.

I am hoping they last a long time, cause I will be doing mine myself when it is time. The only real damage my clutch has had is a tire shop guy a walmart slipped the heck out of it moving it into the shop when I had to make an emergency tire purchase last month. You could really smell burned clutch in the shop, and I was cringing. But it is still OK at 65k or so and I have a Nissan truck with 157k on the original clutch so I am pretty easy on them.

I would think you would get 100k at least on one, unless you are slipping it all the time or drag racing every weekend.

Just wanted to jump in with something that bothers me on warranty issues. Why is it that a torque converter on the automatics is covered under the warranty but a clutch isn't,they both do the same job of transfering power to the trans.

Because a clutch is wear item like brake pads.

Had mine replaced at about 42k. But that was changed along with the entire tranny due to the wrong grease star case issue. So total cost to me was $125.00. That said, having it done under normal circumstances it is a bit pricey as the clutch itself is approx. $900.00, before the labor.

You know what, they never really told me what the price breakdown was. They said they wanted me to pay for the clutch and that it was $900. Maybe they were including the install.
