Clutch Transmission Questions on 2010 SRT8

HI All, I didn't see an area specific to clutch's so I am putting this here. Car has 33K miles on it, nearly flawless, so I think well taken care of historically.

1. My 2010 6.1L has a Hurst shifter, is that stock or an add on?

2. When I first get in and start the car, I always take it out of gear, and it is a son of a gun to get it out, very hard, but then it acts fine, almost like it needs to warm up, but I have tried that also, anyone else experience this?

3. When I first go to put it in gear, whether 1st or R, it wants to grind/find the gears, every time on the first start of the day. It has happened only a couple of times while driving so I thought maybe that was just me.

4. There is a ton of slop in the shifter handle. I like the "clunkiness of shifting" but this amount of play seems strange. When I rest my hand on the shifter handle while driving I can "feel" the gears sometimes.

So, any previous experience with things like this? Should I start with the clutch, shifter, transmission? I am hoping that handle might just be loose from the shifter box, but thought I would ask before I take it somewhere or try to remove the console to get a look at it all.

Anyone have a write up to removing and replacing the shifter?

Thanks.

The Hurst shifter is not factory but was available thru the dealer. 2010 6spds were notorious for faulty grease on the transmission input shaft which made it extremely difficult to get out gear after parked for a while, remedy is to remove transmission and clean the shaft and use the correct grease. As far as the shifter I don't know.

oh boy oh boy....thanks for the feedback though. That sounds spot on because I am telling you sometimes I have to double check that I am going in the right direction it is so difficult.

U think that will fix the grind when going into gear initially also?

I would not count on it, think that might be more shifter related.

This seems to be a characteristic of the Tremec 6060's stock shifter, regardless of year. Most M6 owners swap it out with an aftermarket shifter, the most popular of which are Barton shifters. I have one. Love it, would never go back to stock.

He has the Hurst.
Correct, I have the Hurst. Just checked my build sheet though, it must have been added later as a mod because it isn't listed on it.
Start with the easiest option first.

Remove the boot and check that it actually is a Hurst linkage and not just a handle replacement for looks. The "ton of slop" comment makes me think that you might still have the stock linkage. In either case, I'd still recommend the Barton over the Hurst any day. I replaced my stock to Hurst by myself using videos from Speedy's garage. They are on youtube. Challenger Hurst Shifter Install Part 1 - YouTube It is a 3 part video.

Are you parking on any sort of an incline? In the 13-1/2 years I've owned my SRT, I only had 1 instance that I had a serious issue getting the car out of gear on startup. I was on an incline and had the car in gear when I took my foot off the brake after engaging the emergency brake. The car rolled a bit and locked up the shifter. Upon restarting it, I had a heck of a time getting it out of gear. Now when I park, I don't put it into gear until I shut it off, the e-brake is engaged and my foot is off the other brake.

Maybe I got lucky and they put the correct grease in mine....

Good idea, thanks. And no, never on an incline.

Yes... Grinding going into gear is a symptom of the input shaft splines hanging the release of the clutch. Think about it?
Rather than use the recommended grease, get some Caterpillar spline grease or Sachs grease only. All other stuff is crap. The splines need to be cleaned with a bronze or brass wire brush. Put on a liberal amount, slide the disks back and forth about ten times and then wipe off the excess. You don't want it flying off onto the friction surfaces.
The reason I use Caterpillar spline grease is because it will still be on the splines and working perfect after 20 years.

Great idea, thank you. I doubt this is something I am going to try myself though. I've done lots of engine and suspension work, but never messed with a transmission.
Well now it gets interesting. I watched all 3 parts of his install video, really good video, seems like it will pretty easy to check although I am sure it is the full Hurst shifter and not just the handle.

But, I also watched his review of the Barton, and that piece looks incredible and I like the little extra touches that they designed into it. Makes me want to swap it out just so I know I have the best, not just really good.

We'll see.

I switched the Hurst for the Barton and never looked back.

I was looking all over last night but couldn't find one on sale anywhere yet. Thought I had a discount code for American Muscle but cannot find it yet.
Woo hoo, 15% off right now on Barton's site. Anyone know if the hurst and barton are the same thread pitch on the ball handle? My hurst has a white one, which I almost ordered again, but then thought I would try a different color since I already have the white one, if it will thread onto the barton.

You should fix the input shaft spline problem first. A well known issue regardless of which forum you check. You will be really upset when you discover that the Barton shifter does not fix your original problem.

Totally agree. I put a call into my mechanic yesterday, hoping to coordinate all at once even though it is an easy install, he won't add too much at all to swap them out.

Well I was going to use a smaller shop in town, but still well known and I've use them before but puckered up and called my Mopar dealer and they can get me in on Thursday so I booked it.

Wish me luck

So I dropped it off last night and was immediately worried because they rush you through the check in process so fast it is tough to really get anyone to listen to you. Talked to two technicians, neither of which knew anything about this "common" issue, wouldn't provide any type of even ball park estimate until they get into it. They were supposed to have a shuttle driver run me home, but apparently nobody told him because he had already gone home. I brought the Barton with me and asked that when they put it back together if they would install this new one, and she didn't know if they could do that. I tried to explain that is a VERY similar reassemble process, if not even easier and I was already paying to disassembly and reassembly. I also wanted to make sure that they didn't use the Mopar General Purpose grease when they put it back together, but I didn't get very far.

Anyway, as luck would have it, the Service Manager took me back home so we got to talk on the way. He used to be in the Ford Racing History with a locally famous speed shop and he said that he would make sure the Barton goes back into it, they would use special spline gear grease, get things taken care of...

So I got that going for me...

Well, just what I was worried about because it is 70 out today as the problem was severely worse when it was colder out. They went out and ran through the gears and couldn't find anything wrong, everything shifted just fine.

This time though, they did reference the star case number and mentioned that they agreed it sounded like the fix for what I described, but it just wasn't doing it now.

I am trusting what I know I felt and what so many people are saying and I told them to proceed with the process described above. They are also installing the Barton, $1120 out the door, will be done tomorrow afternoon as they had order in the replacement bolts.

Thanks, I'll let you know tomorrow how it feels.
