I ran across this piece of information out of an SRT8 parts document file and thought I would pass it on here. Since VIN information does not drastically change over the years, I would imagine this 2008 VIN DECODE would be practically identical to 2009 model year as well.
VIN PLATE DIGIT DECODING INFORMATION 1=Country 2=Make 3=Vehicle Type 4=Other 5=Line 6=Series 7=Body Style 8=Engine 9=Check Digit 10=Model Year 11= Assy Plant. 12 -17 = Plant Sequence No.
The following table interprets the VIN Plate position shown above. Digit / Position Interpretation Codes = Description
1 - Country of Origin (2 = Manufactured By DaimlerChrysler Canada) 2 - Assembler (D = Dodge) 3 - Vehicle Type (3 = Passenger Car) 4 - GVWR & Pass. Safety
K = Restraint System Advanced Multistage Front Air Bags Sales Code (CG3) L = Restraint System Advanced Multistage Front Air Bags Sales Code (CG3) K = Without Side Air Bags Sales Code (CGS) L = With Side Air Bags Sales Code (CGS)
5 - Vehicle Line J = Challenger (RWD) (LHD) U.S., Canada, Mexico 6 - Series 7 = Challenger SRT8 D-X-22 U.S.,Canada, Mexico 7 - Body Style 4 = 2DR Pillared Hardtop Body Style - 22 8 - Engine, W = 6.1L 8 CYL Gasoline Non Turbo (ESF), T = 5.7L 8 CYL Gasoline, V = 3.5 L 6 CYL Gasoline 9 - Check Digit 0 = Check Digit 10 - Model Year 8 = 2008 Model Year 11 - Assembly Plant H = Brampton Assembly 12 thru 17 = Vehicle Build Sequence, Model Year Assembly Sequence
Additionally:
To find the mfg date your of vehicle (Challenger), open the drivers side door
and on the right of the pillar or end of the door there should be a door sticker.
The MDH # on the bottom row of your door sticker stands for month/day/hour
of manufacture.
Appendum:
IF I can find any additional VIN information I will come back and post it!
What if there is an "X" in the vin code? I stopped by the dealership I got my Challenegr from and they have another one almost Identical to mine except I remember seeing an "X" in the VIN.
You state the 2nd digit should be a "D" for Dodge..is this correct?

I honestly can't remember. I'll check this morning when I go up there to check on parts, doubt they'll give me the deal I want, but it never hurts to check. I always prefer to try and keep my business local.
As far as the second digit/character...mine isn't a "D" its a "B".

Question I have is refernce to a 2010 R/T.
The 9th digit in my car is an X,
The other car exactly like mine has a 8 in its place.
I know this is a check digit, but what is a check digit??? Why are they different???

The 9th character is a VIN accuracy check digit which verifies the previous VIN numbers
It is determined by carrying out a mathematical computation developed by the Department of Transportation.
