Got caught in an ice storm

I went into work last night at 9pm. I thought to myself "I'll take the car out one last time before winter really comes. I checked the weather before I left and it had a 10% chance of rain and well I took the chance. Around 1230pm the ice storm came and never stopped. I live 40 miles from work and I must say this car handled much better than I expected. I started out in 2nd gear and it went where I pointed it. I had to stop on a slight incline and the car kicked side ways a little bit but it wasn't horrible. "When in doubt throttle out" haha. Although I hate that I had to drive it in an ice storm I am very please and some what intrigued with this car. Not to mention the heated seats were awesome! Way better than my 97 wrangler lol. On the way home I stopped by the gas station to top off and snapped this pic. Kinda cool in my opinion.
Hopefully I won't make a habit of this.

YIKES! That picture is cool and scary all at the same time!! Just confirms that even if you don't want to, the Challenger performs in anything Mother Nature throws at it!
That is rather scary! I hate to even drive a 4wd in the ice! But you seemed to "weather" thru it! Kudos! :rep:
Wow!

That is a story that would be me if I were still working. You refilled my enthusiasm for these cars. I'm happy you got home safely.
Keep on CHALLENGING!
Great pic!

A lot of us drive these cars year round and have to deal with that. Most annoying is the window freezing and trouble opening/closing the doors. But the car does surprisingly well in the snow IF you've got newer tires. Once they get a bit worn it's scary...

My biggest fear is NOT the Challenger getting stuck, but the out of control idiots who'll slam into you. Be careful out there!
great picture for sure....glad you made it home safely and agreed...it's typically the other clowns out there that concern me much more than the weather/road conditions etc.
Great picture!

My Challenger is a daily driver. But during bad weather I try to arrange a ride with a co-worker. I have been caught in bad weather and the Challenger does awesome, I just don't like the traction control. I'd rather have full control over the car.
Yuck! I'm glad I live in SC and seldom get ice and snow. Glad it drove great for you in the snow and ice.
That's why I'm retiring to SC in 2 - 3 years to get the heck out of winter. I've had too much for my taste over the years. Just bought some land in SC - can't wait!
Mine is so bad in the rain that if I had gotten caught in that I would have abandoned the car there until the thaw. To not do that would all but guarantee severe damage.

Do you have the Super Track Pack Goodyear F1 245/45ZR/20 summer tires?

Come on down brother! There's plenty of nice weather down here so you can drive your Challenger all year long.
Thanks for all the concerns. The car really did drive great! But I'm done with the shenanigans! I'm off tomorrow and it's supposed to be 50 here so I'll give her a bath park her in the garage and put the cover on for the winter.

No I ditched those poor excuse for tires after a few burnouts at 10k miles. Those were the worst tires I've ever had on a vehicle.

Too bad.
I'm hoping to use them year round, until they wear out.

i had a hard time keeping traction on any surface and they would throw sand and rocks all over the car. I could hear it the rocks bounce off the car at low speeds. I bought thin mid flaps to help until I could afford different tires. Good luck this winter.
She's all cleaned up and ready for hibernation. I work tonight and it's supposed to snow and ice again.

thanks for the post

I have a 2009 370Z I'm thinking about trading in on a Challenger (I have 4 Mopars from the 1960s so it makes sense) and it won't go anywhere in snow or ice period. Won't slide or slip because it won't even go at all. Just spins. So naturally I was wondering how a Challenger might handle a little snow. This helps.

I've never owned a 370 but I would imagine the challenger handles a ton better. This thing weighs 4000lbs. Some guys on here have 2 sets of Wheels/tires. One for summer and one for winter. I hear blizzaks are a good snow tire for these cars. If i didn't have a beater jeep I'd have a set of blizzaks for winter. Get a challenger you won't regret it.
I've told this story before, but I'll tell it again because what I saw that cold, winter, blizzardy night impressed me. We were on our way home from a weekend ski trip in Michigan in Late Dec. '09. As we got near Benton Harbor/St.Joe which is a bit of a snow belt to say the least, we ran right into a good one sure enough! There was probably 2 inches on the interstate already and the wind and large snow flakes were causing near white out conditions. So we're in our Dodge grand caravan doing at the most about 40 through the snow when all of a sudden I see headlights gaining on us in my sideview mirror. This guy is cruisin along pretty quick, so I'm thinkin it's some SUV or a 4x4 of some sort. As he passes me up going at least 55 or 60 we're like "WOW"! It's a Hemi Orange Challenger flyin through the snow, straight as an arrow and holding the road like it's dry! It was an awesome sight that I'll not forget. My boys were in the car as well and we were all really impressed with the obvious excellent handling.
So a couple months later in Feb. at the Chicago Auto Show, we're checkin out the huge Challenger display and I'm telling this story to the Chrysler rep. there and asked him how that was possible with a rear wheel drive muscle car. He then proceeds to tell me about the type of traction control, etc. etc.
Anyway nine months later I bought mine!...These Challengers are awesome! But I'm not driving mine in the winter...nope.
