Hellcat Carnage: This One Left The Lot, An Hour Later It Is Totaled
By Michael Harding

We saw it with the brand new C7 Corvettes, and even found a couple pictures of a media-loaner Hellcat that sustained some damage. But now we have word that the first Hellcat to be totaled has happened, sadly. We hear that the driver and passenger are okay, but the Hellcat didn’t survive this impact.

We’re trying to get more details and will update as we can, but our friend Matt Kearney found the picture on an SRT Facebook page and shared with us that this car had just left the lot an hour earlier – and then this terrible accident occurred somewhere in Colorado. The Hellcat suffered enough damage that it doesn’t look like the motor is going to be salvageable, and the car will likely end up at an auction for totaled vehicles.

This brings up a good point about buying cars like this that have a bit of a markup, gap insurance would be a very good idea. Gap insurance basically picks up the gap between the value of the car and the price it would cost to replace it. In this case, the car may have been marked up as much as $15-20k, meaning if there is no gap insurance the car owner may be out of luck.

We hate seeing things like this, and we’re glad the occupants are okay, but it just might go to show that sometimes money spent is not money spent wisely. If you don’t know how to handle the car, it might be good to take it easy until you can. We’re hoping that the fault of this accident is someone other than the driver and restitution can be made, but for now… anyone’s guess is as good as ours. We drove one for a week, so we’re well aware of the kind of power this car possesses.

If you have any information, please share it with us so we can share it with the rest of our readers. Be safe this holiday season, everyone!

So sad...hard to look at  but so it begins, sadly this I fear is the beginning and it will drive the insurance rates up and if it happens to much ...well, I don't want to think about it. Glad the driver and passenger are okay, but dam them for doing this to the car :box2:

Well it was here in Colorado, although the roads are dry, as everyone knows the roads DURING THE WINTER are still cold and slick ,and driving the hellcat, and a mere stab of the throttle will let the tires loose at any speed ,ON WARM PAVEMENT ,SO imagine it on a chilly night and the asphalt is cold and slick ,I have done it in my old one and I only have 1/3 the BHP

Another novice driver destroys a car. I would put money down that the Red key fob was in use.

Story's been updated

Here's part of the update. They've also added more pics.

Yet another reader has gone to the scene to get some pictures and collect a few mementos from the site. Michael Clark shows us where the skid marks are, and it appears that on a curve the driver lost control and slammed into a tree. It doesn’t seem like another vehicle was involved, so we may have to chalk this one up to driver error.
Here's the link again.

Glad there was no serious injuries. Most of the time I would have some smart azz comment but I just don't see any humor in it. It's just a car but it is such a waste of resources. If I owned a Hellcat I would respect the cars power and performance to the point of being afraid of it.

Egos, lack of respect and skills are deadly trio in the car and motorcycle world.

It's obvious to me from the photos that this isn't the first time those trees have been hit - look at all the missing bark at the base of the trees

I could imagine someone doing the same thing when that road is snow/ice covered

If you look closely at one of the skid mark photos, you can see where the anti-lock brakes were pulsing represented by dark-then-light-then-dark tire patches just prior to kissing the trees

That highway looks very similar to the rural highways around here. No shoulder, no margin for error. A Hellcat on that road is just asking for trouble in the winter.

Though I'm no accident scene investigator, it looks to me like the were initial skid marks that were going in the same direction as the fist part of the "S" curve, which indicates the driver hit the brakes while turning into the skid.
There's a break in the skid pattern as the car changes direction, which looks the driver may have over corrected and now is heading off the road towards the trees, with the brakes locked up.
At that point, the only thing that could have POSSIBLY saved it was apply throttle as you turn into the curve, away from those pesky trees.
But who knows...It's a lot of quick reaction at the moment vs. analysis after the fact. Still a sad sight to see, :str:
