Despite what you've heard, the $150,000 dealer markup on a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat is real. Well, real isn't the right word. It was actually a very clever trick and a really funny story.
I just got off the phone with the sales manager at Perry Dodge in San Diego, and here's the full story.
They had just received a Challenger Hellcat that wasn't yet ready for sale, so they put it in the back lot where nobody could see it. "My manager told me where it was," the sales manager explained to me, "and it still took me five minutes to find it." The car was tucked away far from sight, even blocked off by two other cars.2
Still, you cannot underestimate how much people want to set eyes on 707 horsepower, and people were sneaking back there to see the car.3
What the dealership was afraid of was people making offers on the car right then and there for sixty or seventy grand, demanding that the dealership meet their price.
So they figured they would put a ridiculous markup on the car so that nobody would make any offers on it. That's when they stuck the sticker on it with $150 grand for "San Diego Market Adjustment."
And it worked, people stopped trying to buy their Hellcat that wasn't for sale in the first place.
But then somebody took a picture of the markup and the photo went viral.
Not long after, stories started coming out that the thing was a hoax or that it was a travesty. "That's when we took it off and put a 'Not For Sale' sign on it," Perry's sales manager explained.
In the end, the markup sticker was real, just not in the way you thought it was. The people at the dealership sounded a little exasperated about the bad publicity they were getting from people who didn't know the full story, and wished that they had gone even more ridiculous with the markup so people would know it was a joke.
"I wish I had put a million dollars on it," he said. "Then I would've gotten more likes."

When I first saw the article only one thing came to mind "A fool and his money will soon be parted".

When I worked at a dealer as a kid the salesmen would say "there's an ass for every seat"

I don't buy it, if someone offered them the money they would of taken it , and why not, if somebody was stupid enough to pay it. It backfired on then and now all they are doing is damage control, but this is one wound that will take a while to heal. With the limited amount of trust if any with most dealerships out there, this bone head move could cost them, I wouldn't want to be a salesperson there. If I had a dealership near them I would be taking advantage of their "error" to move some cars.

There is a great article on the Hot Rod Motor Trend page where Tim Kuniskis is saying that they {Dodge} are watching dealers who have Hellcats. If a dealer has the car still on the lot for a long time they are assuming he has marked it up too high. Dodge says this is a halo car and they want it out on the streets not sitting in showrooms as it will help promote the brand. Kudos!!!
Reminds me of the $40,000 market adjustment I saw an a new 91' ZR1 Corvette. It brought the price up to $110,000, and when I was at the dealership some idiot bought the car for $110,000. I had a bout of stupidity around that time and did not know what I was doing, I was looking at Chevy pickups……..

If they thought they could have gotten that price they would have sold it for that.
There are at least 5 Hellcats within 25 miles of my home that are selling between $58K to $65K. $150K is insane and just plain stupid.

My dealer got its first hellcat last week, Sticker $65,800 plus $7000.00 over sticker plus tax, u can have this one for a hair under $77, NFW
We've got 4 dealers with Hellcats within a 50 mile radius of me... range is from MSRP to a 20k markup ...depending on the dealership.
The same dealership that has a few for $58K also has one for $73K. I'm not sure what a fully loaded Hellcat cost, but maybe there is a markup on that one? The $58K ones sure look nice though to me and that's a great price too for one too!
There are two within 75 miles of me (both northern IL), one sublime auto, one red stick - both window stickers show MSRP....
I could get the sublime for $65,475!!!
No I couldn't, why am I fooling myself...........
$65K? That's all? What are you waiting for? Haha!

My Mom said no:sad:
I told her we have the garage space....then I got the look that said "shut up or you will die a very unpleasant death".

I saw that happen in person when I worked at a dealer. $108k for the '91 ZR1 plus his mint '84 Vette with 4k miles as a trade. Now we can all run faster than an '84 Vette but they turned around and sold that for just over $20k a few days later. Criminal:shakehead:

On that note, as much as I love the Hellcat, if I'm spending over $200k on a car it better have a prancing horse or pissed off bull on the front.
It would be nice to see the window sticker on the cars with MSRP between $58k and up. Just to see what options are driving the MSRP up. I thought the $58k would have all the normal SRT stuff, plus the required Hellcat stuff.

Get your phones out and click a few pics for us !
My local Dodge dealer doesn't have any.
I learn something new every day.
I found the Dodge website that allows search dealer inventory for the car you want. And then you can click on the window sticker for that car ! The automatic trans (8-speed) is a $1,995 option.
