For the peeps who have superchargers and heavy upgrades to their cars, what did you do with your car insurance ? Do you let them know about the upgrade because i fear that something happens to the car and my upgrades are gone as my insurance would just cover the current factory price.

Do you upgrade your policy or would insurance even want to insure it knowing its a racing car now ?

I wouldn't tell them about any of the mods you've done. As far as they're concerned, it's a stock Challenger and that's probably the best for you. I highly doubt Allstate or similar company will say yeah sure we'll increase your insured value for that nice supercharger you've got for zero increase in your premium haha! I wouldn't tell them anything.

I gotta throw a little cold water on the subject. I don't know the fine print of any insurance policy but I know insurance rates go up from a SX/SXT to an RT because of horsepower and performance. The insurance company might deny a claim if there are mods that increase horsepower or value like putting $4000 of wheels and tires on the vehicle. The last thing someone wants is to be in an accident with injuries and find out their car is not covered because of an "oversight". Looking at the insurance companies point of view, a good lawyer can make a case of fraud or at least negligence. Be safe and more important BE LEGAL.

GEICO sent a form, after the coverage started. It asked for a list of mods (if any) to the 2001 Viper that I owned at the time.

I was honest and listed the S/C and VRE wheels.

A few days later a 10 day notice of cancellation arrived. Since the cancellation went into effect 5 days before the letter was received I was driving a car that was not insured. I contacted GEICO and informed them that I planned to report this matter to the state insurance office. They apologized for the timing and stated that they cannot be forced to insure a vehicle that does not meet their policy standards.

I have a clean driving record.

It is best to inquire about adding the SC before the installation and plan to switch insurance companies if they say no.

If an insurance adjuster inspects the car for an accident claim, they can deny coverage and cancel the policy.

You will get book value in the event it's totaled. No need to tell the insurance company anything. If it's not your DD, you can even get a huge discount by having it classified as a 'pleasure' vehicle.

Just found that out this week when I told our agent that the wife & I retired and she reclassified our vehicles. Not sure how much it's dropped yet but she said it was going to save us some money!

From Leland-West Insurance about not reporting mods...

This is an extremely bad idea

If you fail to report your mods on your insurance application, you can be tagged for "material misrepresentation". You risk having a claim refused at a time when you need financial protection the most.

You are entering into a contract with the insurance company when you take out a policy. They have certain obligations to fulfill and so do you. Being truthful to the company about the details they ask for is one of your contractual obligations.

If either party fails to hold up their end of the bargain, there's going to be trouble.

Contact your insurance company. Relying on legal advise from this or any forum is not in your best interest.

Since you have a "racing car" now, I would tell them everything if I were you. :)

I know back in the early 80's a friend replaced the 4 cyl. in a Chevy Vega with a 350 V8 and didn't tell the insurance company, he had full coverage and later he rear ended somebody at low speed and zero injury's but they denied paying because he was driving a modified car and paying for a stock one. Just something to think about.
