Figured I would make a new thread for this to make it easy to find for others. I ordered the manual shifter boot from the Dodge dealer and when I removed the boot from the stock shift rod and handle I saw a problem with trying to install it with the T-handle. So here's how I did it.
Remove the boot from the painted silver trim piece and trim off the tabs that held it on. The chrome like trim does not have inserts for them. Turn the boot inside out and trim off excess threads. Be careful not to cut the knots holding it together.
Use an awl ( fancy name for a sharp ice pick ) to poke 2 holes between each seam near the end of the hole as shown
Go to your tackle box and get your 40 lb. test line and a pair of scissors
Cut off a nice long piece and thread it thru the holes as shown looping it thru 2 times
Insert a Sharpie or other device and tie a surgeons knot (tripple half hitch) to close up the hole evenly and hold it until installed
Nows a good time to apply some you know what about 3 times
Remove the top of the console and remove the top plate and shift position indicator, this is fairly easy, just remove the shifter handle, open the center console, grab the top part and pull up. Be careful of the wires to the cup holders and 12 volt supply on the ash tray delete if installed. Also have a towel ready for the shifter parts as some of them have white grease applied to them. Now is a good time to clean the coffee and soda out of the seams of the console top!
It should look like this when ready. Make sure the parking brake is on, push the little pink button down and move the shifter to the reverse position. Just pull out the bulb from the indicator and tuck the wire under the console. I have plans for that later.
Reinvert the boot and slide it on the shift rod below the slot for the handle set screw. Then sinch it up! Tie another surgeons knot on top of the other then finsh with a half hitch and trim the ends off.
Position the boot as shown
Center the chrome trim plate over the boot
Very gently apply pressure to each corner of the trim a little at a time to (ratchet it) into position
Install the T-Handle and pull the boot up to it
Complete!
It takes a bit for the boot to find its natural folds, just keep it from folding up on the back and binding the auto stick for a few shifts and it works great.
