Old Corps and new Corps. Uniformed members of the 1st Marine Division and veterans of its fiercest battles. Together they marched, one pair after another, toward the flag to rededicate the battle colors.
The tip of the staff was soon weighted with streamers, fluttering strips of fabric signifying the brutal and heroic history of the Corps’ oldest, largest and most decorated division. Among them were nine presidential unit citations, for combat in Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Okinawa, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq.
The annual ceremony at Camp Pendleton honors the founding of the 1st Marine Division on Feb. 1, 1941, aboard the battleship Texas, although the unit’s history dates to 1911 when its first regiment was formed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
