Scat pack or RT?

Hello everyone! Quick backstory. Last year I lost my Chally in an accident. A 2017 Granite RT auto I called Rex. It was pretty sad. Had it since 2017. I had purchased it brand new. I remember driving it off the lot. It was my ride for life. It was a beauty.

Anyway. I decided to move on to a Toyota and while it saves more gas, it’s just not the same. So I’m in the market for a new Challenger! This being the last year they’re making them, it’s pretty crucial. What I really need to decide on is whether to buy another RT or say to hell with it and buy a Scat Pack. What do you all think?

Would a Scat Pack be more worth it?
How much of a difference would I feel it driving wise compared to the RT?
Has there been any major changes to the RT since the 2017 models?

Thanks!

SP by a mile. By ten miles actually. Dont cheap out, the 392 is a ton more fun. Yes it drives differently, sounds better, feels better. Do youself a favor and drive one, you won’t ever look back.

If you are daily driving it the R/T might be a better choice. It will be a little cheaper on gas, insurance will most likely be cheaper. That said the Scat Pack will give you quite a bit of increasd performance.

RT for me hands down. Best DD I ever owned. I owned a Scat and was never happy with it. The RT isnt trying to be fast although it is quick. The Scat is trying to be fast and its not and over priced imo. And unless u get the SRT package it doesnt brake well.

I felt the RT was quicker just not faster. To me the Scat sounded like a truck trying to make it up a hill smh. Just wasnt for me. Didnt handle well, made little power and didnt brake well for the money. Id go RT all day long.

Plus I ran 87 octane with it vs. 93 octane the 392 recommends I guess one could get away with 91 tho. I see no point in 93 octane in a DD. They both do the same time on the street when u floor them.

I drove the RT for 16 years as Police. When I got into the Scat is was NOT any faster. It really wasnt! Watch these videos and decide for urself...... They both are neck and neck.

In my experience my Scat Pack is significantly faster than my R/T was , it also has much better brakes.

R/T vs. Scat Pack? That's a tough one. And right up front I'll offer that it really is only a question you can answer.

Some years ago -- circa 2012 -- I rented a Dodge sedan (or maybe it was a Chrysler sedan) to use to drive my parents around -- and it had a 5.7l engine. The car and engine made a very favorable impression upon me. And then Dec. 2017 decided to buy a new car and decided I wanted a Dodge Challenger. Long story short I ended up with a Scat Pack.

Might mention while I like high performance cars I don't race or engage in any silly street racing or other shenanigans that some owners are wont to engage in. A powerful car is a very good road car and with a big engine is not working very hard to move the car down the road. While the Scat Pack came with 485hp and I forget how much torque on the street leaving stop lights just a small amount of hp and torque was required. The engine was in no way being stressed at all.

Where was I? Oh yeah, why did I end up with the Scat Pack?

Well in short I felt the Scat Pack was the Goldilocks car. Just right. But it was not going to be my daily driver. I was commuting 60 miles a day and this in CA with high gas prices. For my daily driver I bought a MINI JCW. It delivered 30mpg vs. around 16mpg for the Scat Pack. Yeah, with the approx. $33,000 the JCW cost me (I paid $40,000 for the Scat Pack) I could have kept that Scat Pack in fuel for a long long time. But I like having two cars and the JCW was much better suited to commuting and errand running in CA traffic. And a fun car in its own right.

Might mention insurance wasn't a problem for me with the Scat Pack and the JCW.

But the R/T with a 5.7l engine I think is pretty near being a Goldilocks car too, and in some ways more than so than the Scat Pack. Less expensive. Lower running costs. Yet good power. For an owner that wants to have one car to serve/satisfy all his car needs/wants the scales tip in favor of the R/T.

IMHO.

I also lost my baby to a kid running a stop sign on their first day driving. You must move upward and onward, definitely a scat pack or hellcat, you won't be sorry. I went from r/t to hellcat to hellcat, ya just can't go backwards. Just my thought.

And if you're going to order one you better do it now before it's too late.

If you want one, you better get your order in now. Availability is limited and each dealer only has so many allocations. You can go to the Dodge site and there is a locator to find a dealer that could still have RT's or Scats available. Good luck!

If you have no money worries and you're flush with the dough to purchase, insure, maintain, and feed it the required fuel spec, Scat's the way to go. If you have any worries money-wise or have problems coming to a purchase decision, play it safe and go with the regular 5.7 car...especially if it's a daily, high usage vehicle. Heck, if you live in a heavily congested traffic environment, even a 2wd GT would be great choice for some folks, although I'm sure you know you won't get any retro-muscle audio vibes with the GT or SXT models. Going down the road in any Challenger will turn heads, it all depends upon what your own unique financial situation is and where you want your money to flow to when it comes right down to it. Picking whatever makes the most sense to you, not us, is the bottom line I'd think. Good luck and have fun!

You'll pay sticker or much higher for a Scat and get discounts of well below sticker for 5.7 RT's and SXT's...

I went from an RT to a Scat. For me it's a let down. Because of most opinions here I jumped up to the Scat and was expecting a lot more. It's NOT miles ahead of the RT. I feel like I burned 10 grand. The Scat is better, but not justifiably so. And you know what they say about opinions. I'm not giving you mine, just sharing my experience. You need to drive both before you buy or else you're just not gonna know til it arrives. I wish you the best of luck and hope you're happy with whatever you decide.

Do you own a garage, and do you actually use it for your cars? If so, buy the SP. If not, get the R/T. The SP is a more prominent theft target and you'd be playing with fire to park one on the street.
There are pros and cons to them all. I've either owned or driven them all fairly extensively and I know what I like from the experience. What I like, though, may not be what you would like and all of the good folks here, trying to help you with their opinions, are also telling you what they like. Opinions are like...well, you know...everybody has one. Go and drive them. Decide for yourself what you like. Weigh the pros and cons as you see them and make a decision as to what is gonna work for you...what you like best because what you like best is really the only correct choice.

I traded a 2015 Charger RT for a 2022 SP Challenger. SP has alot more power, better brakes. Overall alot more fun to drive in my opinion. RT left me wanting more

Not mine. The brakes were not very good at all on my scat. They were 4 pistons. It was one of my biggest complaints for spending so much more then an RT.

In my experience my Scat Pack is significantly faster than my R/T was , it also has much better brakes.
Test Drive both Models and then decide from that which seems to be more of what you really want.

Scat Pack for the win! The 392 and extra 1K rpm up top is just the way to go. And you better not tarry. The door is closing. If you don't get the SP you will always wonder.......regret is a lonely town.
if you go RT. There are really good rebates and deals on the 2022 RT models now. consider the handling package, you get bigger tires, 4 piston Brakes, and better handling.

/QUOTE]

Exactly. You didn't provide much feedback about your driving conditions, power desires, affordability etc. so you need to answer the following for yourself :

1. You had a GT which implies needing better traction as a DD. Was this necessary for winter driving conditions. Yes/No
2. Were you satisfied with the R/T acceleration/power ? Yes/no.
3. Does the additional cost of the car and gas matter ? Yes/no

If the answer is no to all three questions I would go with the SP.
If its a tough decision and you like the R/T except for the acceleration hesitation, I would go with the R/T and add a Banks Pedal Monster or maybe a tune to wake it up.
Good Luck.
