I adamantly won't race on the street, and I've turned down a few challenges along the way. But this morning was different. I had stopped at a light and glanced over to see an Acura MDX. It was an older model, judging by the parking lot "scars" along the sides and bumper of the SUV.
The light turned green and the MDX surged ahead of me. A family of stick people decals on the hatch left no doubt this was a full-on mommy wagon. The driver of the MDX seemed to be intentionally keeping ahead of the nose of my Challenger, but strangely it was also keeping pace with my car. We both rolled up to the next stoplight and I glanced across to my right to see what jackwagon was piloting this very ambitious MDX.
A 30-ish guy was behind the wheel and I could see at least two young boys in the car. One was in the passenger seat, the other was directly behind the young dad. Both the boys looked at my car and then saying something to their dad. Dad glanced at me momentarily, with a sheepish grin and what seemed to be an almost apologetic look. The light turned green and the MDX surged ahead of me again. I could see the boy in the back seat excitedly slapping his hands on the "shoulders" of the driver's seat.
Then it dawned on me. I was in a really slow moving race with a SUV!
I grinned and did my best to make it look good. I gunned the Hemi and pulled ahead of the MDX by a couple of car-lengths, but only for a second or two. Then I let off the gas and waited for the MDX to retake the lead, and it took what seemed like forever to do just that. I even downshifted my autostick to slow up my Challenger even more. The dad-piloted MDX finally pulled ahead of me and led the rest of the way since I didn't want to have to slow down again.
The MDX beat me to the next stoplight. The boy in the back was executing a victory fist-pump. The other boy in the front passenger seat had a broad grin. I did a mock shake of my head and gave a thumbs up to the victorious SUV and it's crew. Dad gave me a smile and a quick nod of acknowledgement, and returned the thumbs up before turning right.
I'm sure in the retelling of this story, the boys will recount how dad blew away a "Hellcat" today in the family car!
