GLHS592: I do not believe they were allowed to use the 340 cid engine in the Trans Am racing; as mentioned, requirements called for 305 cid maximum size. So, as previously noted, they used a destroked 340. The size requirement is, ironically, what kept the Pontiac Tans Am - named for the race - mostly out of the competition. Pontiac America didn’t have a motor ready that would be allowed in the race. A Canadian Trans Am was entered, with the correct size motor, but the American versions never did enter the race!

What made you decide to purchase a T/A as opposed to some other package?

My story; I loved Dodge and Plymouth cars since I was a kid. I loved the garish high impact colors and the bold stripes. My first love was the Plymouth Road Runner. I soon developed an infinity for the Charger and the Barracuda but I actually didn't even see my first Challenger in real life until I was in college. I fell in love with the car, especially the T/A due to it's stripe package, side exhaust, and P-51-like hood scoop. But I was in no position to buy.

Fast forward 40 odd years. I loved the new Challenger since it was released and always thought someday I would own one. About a year ago, I was delivering face shields to hospitals in downtown Los Angeles and a red Challenger with T/A stripes crossed my path and I was amazed. I had no idea the new Challenger had come out with a T/A version! I instantly hopped online and fell in love all over again.

I wanted a Go Mango T/A with a manual transmission, while Yellow Jacket was my second choice. There wasn't much choice of manuals to be found. As luck would have it, I found at Yellow Jacket T/A in Las Vegas in great condition at a great price and purchased it. On my way home, I cut across the desert from the 10 fwy to route 66. I was in the middle of nowhere with 1970's rock and roll playing, going like a raped ape down a road that looked like it was pulled out of "Vanishing Point" and I was in heaven. My memory of that trip home with the car is so vivid, it feels like I can remember every second of it.

I've had my T/A for a couple months now and still absolutely love it. What's your story?

yeah I got a 2019 yellow T/a its awesome!

I still almost never see T/A's on the road. I believe I have seen 2 total. When you consider they have been selling Gen 3 Challengers since 2008 and T/A's since 2017, that explains much of it. That and just not as many were made period. Kinda like the original 1970.

Yeh I have to agree, I’ve seen one other TA challenger on the opposite side of the highway and that was it. I’ve seen more 50th anniversary editions then TAs. Still my favorite package out of all of them the 50th anniversary. If I bought my car in 2020 I definitely would of ordered a widebody 50th shaker in either hellraisin or triple nickel. I absolutely love that interior and those wheels on certain colors. I might someday get those wheels in black. I seen them on eBay in black but they weren’t the forged ones they were flow formed which is still better then cast but not as good as forged. So it would be a downgrade if I went with those. I wish they did our TAs interior similar to the 50ths and put challenger TA where under the ac vents instead of just challenger

Ordered some Vibrants off Amazon I’m going to get a mid muffler delete and add them in. I’m definitely going to video the before and after to compare. I’ve heard numerous challenges stock exhaust on YouTube and some actually sound a lot more quiet then mine. Idk why that is, mine came straight from the factory so no aftermarket exhaust in it…..yet lol. So these vibrants should sound amazing I hope.

The sound really changes with different years. Good luck.

I really like the exhaust sound of the chargers, their definitely louder then ours. But I wasn’t in the market for a 4 door but I love the front end of the scatpack charger and the hellcat version I dislike it from the side and rear. From the front it looks modern and mean from the side and rear it looks old to me. But that exhaust though!!

But they have 4 doors. You can just stop there. Not many classics with 4 doors. Not any muscle cars with 4 doors.

Yeh that’s why I went with the challenger widebody, ppl say to me why didn’t I just go with the hellcat. I tell them with the same options the narrow body would of been about 10-12k more but I wanted a widebody and the widebody hellcat would of cost me around 18-22k more with the same options. I didn’t want payments and just wanted to own it outright. Maybe if I’m offered a lot more then I paid then I’d consider selling it and buying the widebody hellcat.

I bought the T/A because I had a '74 RR and a '74 Duster back in a land far far away. FFWD and the price they were getting for the restored or well kept RR's was well out of my league so I picked up a 2018 Go Mango T/A 392. Have to say it's much more car than either of my earlier Plymouth/Dodge vehicles.
