This is why you watch the road kids

Driving home from work, somebody wrecked on the other side of the freeway, saw a tire coming my way, luckily I had room to swerve and it missed me and the 3 cars behind me. Stills from my dash cam, I don’t have another way to post the video. Anyways, I highly recommend a dash cam.

Wow, that's too close. Glad you avoided it! What if you had been in a self driving car!

Considering the number of cars I see lately..........front end damage (lots of duct tape), sheet metal dents n rust, constantly driving on a donut tire, we have too many idiots that don't care or respect other drivers.

90% of drivers are as pathetic as their cars (even if stolen).

The second picture looks like the cars are coming towards you?
I used to think the greatest road hazard was a convertible VW Bug driven by a group of teenaged girls. Then it became anyone texting while driving. Now I'm convinced it's teenaged boys swerving e-bikes into traffic. Idiots!

Then older I get, the more I'm convinced I'm the pre-incarnation of Walt Kowalski, or Otto Anderson.

So, scary. Glad you came through unscathed. Say, what type of dash cam do you have? I've thought of adding one to my and my wife's car. Thanks and be safe out there, y'all!

This one is a Thinkware Q800. The one in my Challenger is a Blackvue 900x. That one connects easier to my phone. For some reason apple car play always disconnects me from the camera on the Thinkware. But it works fine otherwise

You dodged a bullet. I've seen a number of vids of loose wheel/tire assemblies hitting vehicles. It is no love caress. Vehicle ends up looking like Thor slammed it with his hammer...

That puts it in perspective just how potentially deadly that was. The closing velocity is chilling and it's just a miracle it didn't end up in someone's lap.

That was a close call! I was riding one of my bikes home from work one day a year or so ago. As I was passing an 18 wheeler as a tire blew. I ducked as a big chunk of rubber went right over my head. Wish I would have had a helmet cam that day. It's crazy how fast things can happen, and how dangerous tires and debris can be.

I had the awkward experience of driving a vehicle on which that occurred. I worked for International Harvester at that time (late 1960s-early 1970s). Our delivery vehicles were IH Travelalls, which were some of the worst-built trucks made at that time. I was on a highway at 55 MPH when the rear axle separated at the differential and the right rear wheel and partial axle fell off, rolled across the highway, and destroyed someone else's car going in the opposite direction (no injuries, fortunately).

Admittedly off-topic, but other Travelall quality failures I experienced (with different vehicles) included:

  • A tailgate window stuck down during heavy rain
  • Windshield wipers which worked "sometimes"
  • Accelerator pedal linkage snapped so that I had to drive the van using the manual choke (20 MPH maximum)
  • Van would start only in "Drive"
  • Another time when "only" the road wheel fell off
  • Passenger front window shattered when I was sitting with the engine off and no one else anywhere nearby
  • Vehicle ordered with power steering but not installed; it was impossible to turn the wheels fully
IH discontinued manufacturing Travelalls after the 1975 model year, which is not surprising since they averaged only about 11 MPG (maybe 12 MPG highway), which makes my Scat Pack seem like a gas-saver.
