I was out with my wife and kids coming back from dinner with our family when some kid in a early 2000's Mustang GT rolled up next to me with loud exhaust. He stayed side by side with me for a little bit then gunned it and sped up ahead of me. Then he slowed down and revved his engine again next to me.

We got stuck at a light. The light turned green, we both took off kind of slow, then when I got into 2nd gear he started to go faster, then I started to go faster, then I heard him gun it so then I just nailed it haha! I pulled on him pretty bad, he was in my rear view mirror pretty quick. I got up to about 55-60 mph and slowed down right away. Not something I usually do but my inner 19 year old self got the best of me.

After that he stayed back and wasn't revving his engine anymore. We got stuck at the next light ahead and he looked over and was laughing. I think he just wanted to see what the Challenger could do haha!

Those cars aren't all that fast so I'm not surprised I got him but it was still a fun way to end the night regardless haha!

Ha! That was a fun read Carl!! Makes me think of high school and all the stop lights, and those great three lane one way streets. I think they designed those streets just for us drag racers!!

Haha yeah it was fun! I didn't want to get going too fast so I let up once I got ahead of him a good bit. I used to do that every weekend in my Nova years ago, race people up on Telegraph Rd near my home, good times!

Good story! Its is nice that old farts like us can be 19 years old again sometimes.

(by "old farts" i refer to myself and Carl, Betty is forever young)
Ha! You guys really are young!! For certain, the Challenger always makes me feel like a teenager!!

I've found a lot of those older Mustangs sound really mean, loud exhaust, they look tough, but when you get down to it they really aren't all that fast. Every now and then you'll come across one that has a blower on it, then it's a different story haha! But those cars really weren't all that fast in stock form. It was fun though regardless!

My stock Coyote GT was faster than my R/T by almost a full second.....no contest. The earlier G/T's however, can't hang. Sounds like you guys had fun!

Yeah the newer Mustangs with the Coyote 5.0 will take out an R/T pretty easily. They're a high 12 second car in stock form where the R/T's are mid 13's stock I think.

The older Mustangs with the 4.6L though are fair game for a R/T. The Coyote 5.0's are better matched against the 6.4L SRT or Scat Packs. Or an R/T with a supercharger like some guys have on here.

Crap for a minute there I thought I was reading a story I should write, similar situation. My wife and I were headed out for dinner one night and I could see this guy in a Mustang behind me, looking like he was desperately trying to catch up. When he finally switched lanes enough time to pull along side, he gunned it and raced ahead until slowed by traffic, since it was a nice day, we both had our windows down so as I pulled along side, I hollered - "is that all you got?" He looked at me and gunned it again down the road and slowed down for me to pull along side, when he looked over at me I just shook my head and said, "that's too bad, you should have gotten a Challenger!" My wife is livid with me for being so teenager but I was laughing my ass off and figured that was well worth a few minutes of her wrath! The guy ion the Mustang just slinked off down the road!

so far i've taken out two 5.0 coyote mustangs in the 1/8th with my r/t. both had drag radials and both were manuals like me. the outcome in the 1/4 mile would probably be a different story, but i got the jump on both of them and stayed ahead by at least a half car. both guys were cool and said they didnt expect that from the big mopar :)

Nice! The 5.0 doesn't make much torque down low, I think our 5.7's make more power down low actually. But they rev up to 7000RPM so they make most of their power up high. I could see how you could keep up if you got the jump off the line.

I'd like to get some drag radials and 17" rims for my Challenger one day and see what it could really do at the track. With my current 20" wheels and street tires I just can't get a very good ET at all, my 60ft time sucks, can't get out of the hole any good. Either I spin, get wheelhop, or it bogs a little. If I could get a 1.8 or 1.9 60ft with drag radials then I'd stand a good chance to get a low 13 second run.

yeah, the 5.7s make good power and torque down low which help getting out of the hole, but if you are running street tires you cant really go all out and use it all. i absolutely LOVE the M&Hs that i have on my 17" cobra rims for track days. i can launch so much harder. hard enough in fact that i get that dizzy, "roller coaster" sensation...and i'm near stock power levels still when she hooks up just right :) i air them down, rev her at the line to about 3000-3500rpms, and let the clutch out fast, but even. not a full on dump. she will spin clean for a bit with no wheel hop but then squat and bite. i'm sure if i were a better driver, i could launch it to where there would be even less wheel spin but i'm not that skilled! i also dont even do a full on burnout before staging so there is room to improve!

with that being said, i will say my car runs out of steam in the upper rpms. i hope to offset that a bit with the SRT headers and mids i have sitting in the basement along with an SRT MBRP cat-back going on this spring. then its off to get a dyno tune from OST. hoping it will breath a little better up top. i'm sure a lot of that has to do with the cam though.

Where did you get your Cobra R rims? Did you get replicas or real ones? What size M&H's are you running? I know there are a couple popular sizes guys use, one being smaller and the other being closer to stock size diameter .

I agree, the 5.7L makes great power all around up to about 5500-5800RPM and then it's all done. I think swapping in a 6.4L cam would probably fix that and allow you to go up to 6500RPM while making good power up to that RPM.

My old 383 in my Nova was a torque monster, had a small cam and small chamber heads on it. Ran out of steam around 5000RPM but from off idle to 5000RPM it was a total torque monster. With the bigger cam and heads I have on it now it makes great power up to 6500RPM, but it doesn't really come to life until 3000RPM so I needed a higher stall converter for it. I would imagine a bigger cam in the 5.7L would do the same thing.

i have the 275/50-17 M&H Racemasters on replica cobra wheels. i found a set of those on the lxforums for sale section for like $100. bought them from a guy that used to use them on his Charger and he had them slightly bored out to fit the hub better. oh, and i bought a different set of lugs too...the kind that let the threads go through the lugs (hope that makes sense).

i know you can get some cobra replicas that fit better than others and some need a centering ring. i've run mine a bunch of times and have driven to and from the track with them on with no problems at all.

about the diameters...i'd go with a slightly lower diameter over stock to give you better ratio. for example...my drag radials are a bit smaller than my stock wheels, my car has the 3.92 rear end so in essence, the smaller diameter would make my ratio closer to 4.xx, and making it easier for me to get the holeshot when i launch it right :)

I don't know if it works for you six speed guys but I got my best quarter mile times by shifting at 6,000 to 6,200 with my automatic R/T. I raised the rev limiter with the Predator and set the shift points up. Also when used in conjunction with the MTCM (I know that doesn't apply to you guys either) it worked great. Just saying it might be worth trying shifting slightly higher the next time you are at the track.

Drag radials I'd recommend are 275/50/17 M&H's work great for me. I started with 275/40/17's but they gave me fits, worked about half the time and dumped me into limp mode about half the time. I've heard that six speed guys generally don't have this problem, so they might work for you but due to my experience I generally recommend the 275/50/17's.
