8/25/21 - Just a quick video of my 3 week old '21 GT RWD with 1100 miles on it. Took delivery 8/7/21. Problem arose at just over 700 miles. Driveshaft/transmission not always disengaged when using push button start causing the "clunk" sound. That sound is the driveshaft trying to rotate just for that split second.
8/29/21 - 1300 mile update: problem is getting worse. After any appreciable time on the highway the whole car "lurches" on startup (when everything is up at normal operating temperature).
The issue is related to the push button start. Weird...but true. At normal operating temperature, in warm weather, something internally is either causing or allowing the transmission to engage on start-up. The whole car "lurches" as the drive shaft tries to rotate causing the noise. Here's where it gets weird: it ONLY happens when using push button start (foot on brake then push button). My car came factory equipped with remote start. When using the remote start, this never happens. Push the button on the key fob twice, car starts up, no noise no thump, get in, NO FOOT ON BRAKE, push start button on dash and voila, you're off and running. There is some correlation with the "foot on brake/push button start" and warm ambient temperatures.
At the time of writing this, 1/24/22 and 5k miles later, winter has set in and with cold NE temperatures the thump/clunk on start-up seldom happens. Happens almost every start in warmer temps (+50 deg F).
FCA, of course is denying anything is wrong and tying the dealer's hands by calling it a "characteristic of the vehicle". FCA also claims that they are "aware of the issue" but there is "no fix". According to the dealer, FCA said they weren't even sure if they would fix it even if they had a fix for it. Nice. Of course, the dealer wouldn't advocate for me even after their service manager said "that definitely isn't right". The dealer won't do anything simply because FCA claim there is nothing to fix. I was actually told by my service rep "not to worry about it 'cause you have plenty of warranty left". Again, nice. Is this how FCA and Elmwood Dodge in RI treat their customers?

Hello,
I've only had my challenger for 2 months (2021) and I'm having the same issue. However, I took my car into the DCJ dealership in Tallahassee, FL and the service rep and the mechanic heard the noise. I left the car and they stated they would find out what was going on. . They called me back within 5 hours and to know surprise Chrysler states nothing is wrong with the car. I guess cars are suppose to knock in 2022. I'm confused and frustrated.

What did you guys do about it? I have the same issue right now with my 2023 Dodge GT. I've been trying to find out what the issue is. I know there is a manufacturing dysfunction. I am left with nothing but to proceed with the Lemon Law. If you had/have the same problem, let me know what the cause of the clucking is. My goal is to fix it because I have a deep love for Dodge. This issue been worrying me. Is this considered a safety issue? I have kids and don't want to risk it.

There really is no risk to you or your family. Here is why...(Hopefully) My dealership mechanic contact whom has been a driveline mechanic for nearly 35 years says that this issue seems to be related to the self test of the Brake start interlock system self test. Not all cars have the problem. That is key! He says that cars that are started properly do not exhibit the problem. That's not a dig about not knowing how to start your engine. These vehicles have TIP start systems. The driver is NOT supposed to hold in the start button until the engine starts. You are supposed to merely touch the button and let go. The engine will continue to crank and start by itself just as if you used the remote start function.
The only drivers that need to hold in the start button are the ones with the M6 gearbox.
Try it and see what happens.

Mine does it when I'm coming to a stop or starting the vehicle. It's something with the drive shaft components. I've went to the dealer 3 times and still can't get ahold of dodge cars. Fix your shit dodge. Wtf. Brand new car shouldn't be doing this. No wonder why they push there warranty 8 times a month through email.

Dude I sware the amount of people that are having this issue. This is not normal if I would have know. This I would of went with a mustang or camaro. People saying it's normal it's not. When you hear humming from your drive line the balancing is off and the clunking is a faulty. Could be u joint, differential gears, bearings. This could possibly harm the transmission in the long [email protected] won't do shit.
