OK, I obviously know what it means but how often do you R/T owners get asked this question? BTW. it doesn't help that Dodge indiscriminately put this symbol on Dakotas and Mini-vans for awhile - right, these vehicles are ever going to the track?

Anyway, my plates exacerbate this problem because they say "QUICK RT". The most common guess is "Quick Route." (not bad but not correct). I recently added an R/T grill symbol to the rear spoiler to give others a clue that R/T is the car model.

Nice touch with the badge on the spoiler, a popular mod that looks great!

My pet peeve with Dodge is they seem to put R/T on what ever they want ...really.. the Caliber! the Caravan! the Journey!, I'm waiting to hear the Fiat 500 R/T. It should be kept ( in my opinion) to the Challenger and the Charger, it would then have a more significant meaning towards a level of performance.

I am pretty sure there was never a Plymouth RT but back in the original muscle car days they referred to their heavy hitters (Cuda, Roadrunner, GTX) as part of the Rapid Transit System which was based on the Dodge Scat Pack package.

A few years back I was stopped at a light and some guy (tripping over the sidewalk as he said it) yelled out..."Hey nice car...do you know what RT means". I said Road and Track and he gave me a big grin and a thumbs up. I turned to my friend and said Rapid Transit if you prefer.

It used to be Road and Track , but the magazine had the rights to the name so they changed it to Rapid Transit, I think only Dodge used the name, there never was an R/T Barracuda, the performance name was Cuda to differentiate the High performance,vs the lo po version

Rapid Transit was to Plymouth what Scat Pack was to Dodge in the late 60s to early 70s a marketing gimmick to make people aware of the Chrysler Muscle cars of the day.

Originally, R/T (Road/Track) was used on 1967-71 Dodge performance cars. Dodge was making performance cars well before 1967 but it didn't use to market performance trim levels with a catchy name. An exception was Chrysler's letter series 300, i.e. the 300F. Dodge finally learned from the competition the value of marketing performance with an identifiable name in the same way GM capitalized on naming their performance trims levels with "SS" and "GTO" and "442". After 1971 Dodge downplayed performance and the name "Rallye" was used to promote performance that focused on handling and styling over straight-line acceleration.

The question I am asked the most is not what R/T stands for but "Is that the new Hellcat?"
Gee, that is so much BETTER than someone asking is that the new Charger, is that the new Mustang, is that the new Camaro.

You are only partially correct here.
The R/T designation was used by Dodge only. It was used to identify their more muscular versions of certain models ( 440 and Hemi equipped). The magazine had nothing to do with them ceasing to use the R/T designation. In fact, they never did.
The Rapid Transit System was a Plymouth only marketing scheme used in 1970 and 1971. It was used to promote all of their V8 muscle cars from the 340 Duster up to the Sport Fury.

well I was asked if my car was a Hemi camaro never heard of that. and old man at a car wash asked me what does RT stand for thinking I didnt know and when I told he smiled and said enjoy it. funny think I thought before I started doing research about these cars to figure out which model is best for me I thought SRT stood for Straight 8 until I learned. I love these cars from V6 to the Hellcat.

The term "Hemi" has been with justification, used outside of Mopar and it was on Ford's 1969-70 Boss 429 engine which had nick-names "Semi-Hemi" and "Twisted-Hemi". I think that Ford used the term "crescent-head". Like the Mopar Hemi engine, the Ford 429 Boss engine had massive cylinder heads.

Another bit of info on the BOSS 429's.
Ford actually had to send those fast backs out to an aftermarket factory to have the engine bays modified so the BOSS 429 would fit!!

I got asked this today. Some guy in a Camry pulled up next to me and said he'd been chasing me for about 2 miles to ask me if it was a Hellcat. :shakehead: I told him no it was a Scat Pack and he didn't know what that was but he said he loved it and was going to have to get him one in the same blue as mine.

I understand where he is coming from. I looked at photos of your car and it is sweet looking.
