The 6.4 Liter comes from the factory with 0W-40 Pennzoil Synthetic. I checked and Pennzoil Ultra 0W-40 Synthetic is about 10 bucks a quart.

The Dealer where I bought the car gives me the first 4 oil changes free, but someday I'll be changing it myself.

Wally World has Mobil One 0W-40 synthetic for 5 bucks a quart. wondering if that would be and acceptable substitute.

I'll probably end up using the Pennzoil anyway, but just curious as to what other folks use.

Thanks.

I haven't done mine yet, had the dealer do my one free change at 2100 miles. But when I do, I am using Amsoil 0W40. I am a big fan of Amsoil, have been using it in my wife's Jeep w/ the pentastar V6 and have had no issues at all. Their 0W40 is rated 25k miles for normal or 15k for severe, so it will easily take the 3-4k I will change it at. our manual says never go over 6k, and I like to be safe, without wasting oil, so I am figuring around 4k per change. Retail is around $11/qt, I am signing up as a preferred customer, it gets you %25 off, and with the 6 oil changes a year I do on our various vehicles, it will save me some money.

Most of the oils out there nowadays are pretty good. If you use a good quality oil and filter and change it at the recommended intervals you should have a nice happy engine for a long time. Everyone has their favorite but I don't know anyone that had an engine failure due to using Brand X oil when they changed it at regular intervals, etc.

Still hard to believe how thin the oils are nowadays. My 5.7L uses 5W-20, looks like water pouring it into the engine haha!

About that,

Check with your dealer and confirm that those 4 free oil changes include synthetic. Many times the free oil changes include only standard oil, and sometimes the dealer will give you credit for a standard oil change, and charge you the difference for a synthetic oil change. After confirming the details of your free oil change, repeat your request to the service manager when you take it in.

I've seen this video before, and I don't really care what anybody else decides to use, I don't own stock in any oil companies, but that video has some major issues. He is comparing base line Amsoil to Royal purple's best, and he outright drops the weights on the Amsoil billets instead of gently placing as he does on the Royal purple billets, which can make a big difference contact pressure performance. He doesn't allow the same time for each to run in the oil bath before adding the weights. Just too many variables for me to draw a conclusion, and by the purple anodizing and paint on all the equipment, I wouldn't be surprised if Royal purple made the video, which adds to my skepticism. But Again, to each their own. use what you are comfortable with.

I agree with you, used amsoil in a 69 camaro 383 stroker and never had a problem.any synthetic today is a good choice
I agree also, that any synthetic that meets the specs is fine, I used Mobil 1 back in the day when it was about the only widely available synthetic. I had a 1985 Shelby Charger with the turbo, and only trusted synthetic with that much heat. Also I have always been a Pennzoil fan, even though I know a lot of people don't care for it, and a quick story about Royal Purple. Just because I don't necessarily believe the video, I have used it, and I had really good luck with it. I had a 2002 Durango that was averaging 12.5 mpg on Castrol synthetic, changed my oil to Royal Purple, trip computer on next tank went to 14 mpg and stayed there until my next oil change. Put the Castrol back in to see what happened, dropped immediately back to 12.5 So even though I have a hard time believing manufacturer's claims, I proved to myself I guess just how slippery Royal Purple is, which can't be a bad thing. If efficiency is up, power should be too, so even though I call BS on the vid, I do like their product, I just chose to go Amsoil on this vehicle for now, may switch later.

^ Interesting about the mpg increase. Did you use the same weight oil? If you kept it in the engine long enough it would just about pay for the difference in price between a regular oil and RP.
