I have an opportunity to get dyno'ed and while I know what the result is...I don't know the details on what happens in terms of engine RPM, speed, duration ...that sort of thing

Is it akin to running 1/4 mile drag runs?

Any practical, experience based feedback would be great.

With my car they ease through 3 gears then they gun it in 4th and go to red line to get their readings and then back off.

With an auto they usually do a pull in 4th gear, which is a 1 to 1 ratio in the transmission. Usually the pull is shorter than a 1/4 mile run. Also keep in mind dyno's are all different, I know Mustang dyno's usually give lower numbers. Mine put done 370 hp but seeing a lot of others peoples numbers with mods similar to mine, I think that number is high. The dyno is really a tuning aid, if you notice the above video, that had a wideband air fuel meter sensor stuck in the right tail pipe.

What Alan said! If you have a 6-speed, they will pull it through all 6 gears.

Not sure why they would pull through all 6 gears...

4th gear is 1:1 ratio isn't it?

All my dynos across multiple different manual cars, the run is done in the gear that offers 1:1.

I've had dyno's done at 3 different places on my last 6-speed SRTs and they never went past 4th gear. Yes, 4th gear is 1:1 ratio.

Not sure I can answer that (at least the why behind it). All I can tell you is when I watched them do mine, he ran it all they way through the entire gearbox.

I would love to know why? It has no purpose for tuning. 4th gear pull is all that is needed.

Dunno, I will ask him when I talk to him next week. I do know that at high rpms he was testing for some backpressure issues from the stock cats under high boost. He said he found it only under certain situations and it led us to replace them with JBA hi-flo versions. Could be he was just being thorough...
