So I'm watching Barrett-Jackson episode 5 in Scottsdale and this 1970 Dodge Challenger RT 440 6 pack 390 HP 4 speed Dana 60 comes up on the block. Guy says this is the correct factory shade for this car which was the same color Plymouth used but called it Plum Crazy. Galen Govier had just walked by and noted this Challenger is documented in his registry. This 1970 Challenger just sold for $68,000. This is the first time I think I have heard the color term Genghis Grape used on the original Dodge Challengers.

This was one sweet Challenger. I'm sure it's a little price inflated due to being at Barrett Jackson' auction, but nonetheless, this is a great car I would have loved to bid on and obtained.

Actually that price sounds a little lower than I would expect, interesting.

I saw that, too. I'm no expert but, never heard of Genghis Grape before.

This page at maxwedge.com says Dodge's name was Plum Crazy, while Plymouth's was In-Violet.

If you read Bjorn's link in English, it goes: "What do you call a car with a 440 six pack, four on the floor, purple metallic paint.....?" and the answer was Genghis Grape. Sounds more like a play on words from the text that the announcer misinterpreted as the color. In Violet was the Dodge version of Plum Crazy.

In-violet was Plymouth's name just so there is no confusion:smileup:

That's not the color name, but Genghis Grape sure would be a great name for one of our PC Challengers! :Wow1:

I stand corrected. Regardless, Genghis Grape was never a Dodge or Plymouth color...maybe they'll use that name for a purple Hellcat in a year or two...

I just saw this as I'm catching up on Barrett-Jacksonon the DVR. Mike Joy actually called the Plymouth color Plum Crazy. Slip of the tongue.

At first I thought the price was high just because it was being auctioned at BJ, but after seeing the car and it's all original with Galen's seal of authenticity, I think 68k was a steal for this car.

As I type this I'm watching episode 10 and they are auctioning a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird B Body which they're saying is one of the rarest cars out there and it just sold for $295,000.

Correct Dodge Guy... the "Pinks" carried two names as did several of the other colors

There were several color names that were "off the books". Kind of corporate nicknames. I can only think of one at the moment, Burnt Orange Metallic was called "Come and Get me Copper".
