Working under the car

Hey Guys!
So I was wondering just how everyone works under their car. I got a new exhaust(Cat-back) and I bought some ramps as well. I backed my car up ontop of the ramps and could get under the car but not enough to do the work comfortably. I didn't wanna stress over it and I wanted to put the exhaust in this weekend so I drove over to a garage and they wanted 220$ to take off the existing exhaust and put on the new one, which I thought was outrageous... So how does everyone here do their work? Tomorrow I'm gonna give it another try but my big bulky body cant maneuver too well below the car lol

i was quoted $120-$140 from a dodge dealer to take off factory and install new Corsa Extreme... luckily my neighbor works for a toyota dealership and i got the "good neighbor" discount of $60 installed at toyota...

i'd shop around a bit and find a better price... $220 seems a bit high to me... i didn't want to get under my 2 ton car to do it... just not for me... good luck and hope you find a good deal... what ever you do, be safe!

Put my cat back on using ramps and it was a little tight under there but better than paying someone else to do it.

Back in the 70's and 80's there used to be a place on Long Island that rented lifts by the hour. Can't remember their name. Don't know if any exist today.

I used my Rhino Ramps and a creeper to install my exhaust. It wasn't the most comfortable experience, but it was way more comfortable than forking over $ for something I could do myself.

Local exhaust shop did it on the hoist $80 cash did the trick.

Seems like I was being scammed.... I'm gonna give it another go today, maybe I'll go get a creeper to make it easier on me rather than squirming like a worm haha
Just hope they have something really low, tight as it is already.

As far as that guy building his own, I dont think I'd trust some 2x8's and some plywood to hold my car up lol

She weighs 4240. I have never taken her off the ground. She has been on hydralic lifts at the dealer and I have seen her off the ground. they took her off the ground to see why the car was swaying to the right. Now, as of today, she is swaying towards the left, I have to call and make an appointment for her and have them check the leak in the driver's window again. I am getting VERY upset at all the things going wrong with her. Maybe a call to the HQ will net me a new 2011 Challenger. I want to keep Christine, but these things keep happening!

I took it to an exhaust shop recommended by the guys in the servcie department. $65/hr and they were done in about 2 hours. $220 is high.

Rhino ramps for the front wheels and at least two sets of jack stands to put up the rear. You will also need a hydraulic jack. You can get a decent racing jack from O'reilly's or Pet Boys for about $100 bucks. I always double the jack stands on the rear after getting the front on the rhino ramps, then I try to shake, push and pull the back end to make sure it is completely stable. I then use moving blankets to get underneath. A creeper uses a couple inches you really need under the Challenger. I also have another small hydraulic jack and the racing jack with a couple 2 foot 2x4s to help lower the exhaust system when needed to avoid any stress on the header connections or mids when unbolting or bolting back up.

Rhino ramps on the back end....moving blanket on the ground and a small friend ( canadiancanuck) crawling underneath LOL. Seriusly it's not that bad I've gone under since then, to check and re tighten...I'm not a big guy 5'8 180...but the height was high enough to get the job done and feel safe doing it.

What type of system are you putting on? The Magnaflow systems are know to need some tweaking on the drivers side pipe, which mine did. So they can be a pain in the arse to do by yourself.Nice to have an extra set of hands and all the proper tools you need. I would call around and ask some other exhaust/performance shops in the area if you could make a cash donation to the lunch/beer account.

I got the Solo Mach X-R/T(NT), I was able to get under the car enough to reach the Cat-pipes to mid-pipes clamp which was rusted like hell. After messing around with that I finally got the clamps unbolted then I went to the spring bolts and got those undone. The thing that stopped me was the Mid pipe not budging... I tried for a good 30-45 minutes and it wouldnt move one bit... now I'm exhausted and disappointed... guess I'll shop around for another garage to do it for me

I just got the solo exhaust put on my srt this week. Midas had a hell of a time getting the old system off and I only have 2000 miles on her. Had to use a torch to heat it up and bang on it with a rubber mallet. They did the install for $90. Very cheap IMO.

Level ground backed her up on ramps and used jack stands for front.I'm 5'10 225# it was a pain due to my arthritis but I took my time and got it done.Muffler shop near me quoted 375 until I told him it was all bolt on then he came up with 225:strokin:

It's a shame, mechanics around here are generally thieves.... If I was a mechanic and an opportunity to work on a new age muscle car came along I would love to work on it and not rip off the owner... especially since all they do all day long is work on old beat up japanese cars

I installed my Corsa at home. Had it up on all four jackstands so I could install DODGE center caps and caliper covers while I was at it. The x-pipe was somewhat stubborn to get off. I hooked up a come-along to it and the hitch on my truck, put a bit of tension on it and banged the suitcase with a 2lb mallet - it started to go. A bit more tension on the come-aling and some more persuasion with the mallet and it was off. Whole job took less than 2 hours.

Well, I did it!
Put the rear on ramps then jacked up the front, gave me enough room to reach the Cat-down pipes.... hardest part was getting the mid-pipes off.... wacked it for about 30 minutes with a dead blow hammer then kept wiggling it and it came off.... whole thing took me 3 hours and I did it after dark... that was fun haha but boy was it worth it!
