2013-14 SRT8 CORE or a 2015+ SCAT

This is my first post.

Hi!

I'm looking at Challengers and trying to narrow down what I want.

Things I do want:

6M
392/6.4L

Things I don't want:

Any kind of hole in the roof
Active suspension
Brembos (6 piston $$)
Huge payments!

It looks like my best choices are the 2013-14 SRT8 CORE or a 2015+ SCAT. Maybe an 11 or 12 SRT?

So I have some questions:

Did the 11 and 12 SRTs have active suspension?

What is the story on the dual disk clutch? Which cars got it or didn't get it?

I think I read something about the differential in the 2015+ being mounted differently which seems to be a positive thing for wheel hop and all around NVH. Is that true?

I have seen that the 2015+ cars require the engine controller to be sent in for modification before they can be programmed.

I've found a few posts saying that the older ECU's have more flexibility when custom programming is required. Have they started to get the later ECU's figured out to where this is a non-issue?

I am looking for a fun car that I can drive frequently, maybe daily. I may make an occasional pass at a strip for fun, or run up through the gears and bang out some power-shifts, so having more robust parts is a bonus if the later cars are better in that regard.

I may do some small up-grades. More than likely a programmer and minor bolt-on stuff. The deepest I would go is a cam and headers. I've done engine rebuilds, turbo kits and engine swaps. Not looking for that stuff here. The fun to effort and expense ratio on that stuff is just too much for me. Guess I'm just getting old and want something more "turn-key" that I can enjoy without spending a bunch of time wrenching on it.

I'm open to suggestions and advice. Not quite ready to buy, still doing my research and saving up a down-payment.

Welcome from AZ. All SRTs and Scats have Brembos.

No that didn't come into play until I believe 2013, then regular SRT's got it while the Core models continued with the pre 2013 SRT suspension.

"I have seen that the 2015+ cars require the engine controller to be sent in for modification before they can be programmed."

That is correct, you can either buy another PCM that has been modified so you can tune it or you can send in your original and have it modified.

I have a 2014 SRT Core and really like it, the biggest advantage IMO of the Scat Pack over the Core would be the A8, since you are looking for a M6 however I would say there wouldn't be all that big of an advantage of the Scat Pack over the Core in terms of performance. Other differences of course are an extra 15 ponies (electric steering pump and active exhaust), newer interior with touch screen vs none of that on the core and of course updated styling. All that is of course subjective as to weather one likes the upgrades or not.

The Core and the Scat are almost identical except a Core will be 470HP and a Scat will be 485. Having driven both I think you will be pleased with one or the other. You still get some things on the SRT that you will not get on the RT...

Just to second 70baracuda, the A8 is where it's at. The 15 extra horses is great and all, but the trans is the deal maker. Had 3 cars with the A5 and 2 with the A8 (between the wife and I) and i dont know if you could pay me to go back to A5. And just to be clear, I'm not trying to offend anyone at all, just saying that the difference between them is incredible. Maybe try and test drive both and see for yourself! Good luck!

If you want to race the car a lot, you really can't beat the 392/A8 combo. It flat out rips!

However, you said you wanted to go with the M6 trans. In that case, either the SRT Core or Scat Pack would suit you. I believe they both have the 4 piston Brembos and do not have any fancy suspension stuff.

The Scat Packs have 15hp more, but that's not a huge deal. You can tune the SRT Core for less than tuning a Scat Pack as you need a PCM for the 2015+ model years.

Obviously they have different exterior styling. Different front end and rear end, etc.

The other big difference will be the interior. The 2015+ model years have the redesigned interior. Some people like it, some people hate it. I had a 2010 and now a 2015 and I liked them both. The older interior was more basic and old school, I liked that about it. But the new interior is cool too, more modern looking, etc.

You really can't go wrong with either car. I would test drive both and see which one speaks to you more.
