How do you sell a car with a lien?

Since I've never sold a vehicle that wasn't paid off completely, I'd like some information on how to sell a car that still has a lien on it.

Has anyone done this and what are the procedures for the entire process?

Why would someone give me money to buy a car that they can't legally own until the lien is released?

How long does it take to get the lien release after you pay off the car?

How difficult is it selling a car with a lien?

Thanks!

Every state is a little different in how it's administered, but in essence, the lien holder has to be party to the transaction.

Most people finance even used cars.

Get the information of your lien holder and pay off and give it to the finance company the person is getting the loan through. The loan company will fill out all of the paperwork including the dmv paperwork. The loan company will then send the lien holder their money and give you the difference. I find it best to not try to do these kind of transactions on a weekend.

Also make sure you get a release of libility filled out and subitted to your local motor vehicle department. Thay way if the drive off and kill somone with the car you will not be liable.
