Depends how you feel about drone

 

Is the drone pretty load when cruising? What exhaust system do you have on your car?

 

It will be louder, not better sounding. I have a 2017 T/A 345 which is the year they started adding 3.75" active exhaust and the sound of stock running in Sport mode sounds great. I also have motorcycles and the first thing I do is a header with tiny baffles. On cars I like headers and modified exhaust. I had a 2012 Challenger 345 and hated the sound of the stock exhaust (2.5" w/o active exhaust). It sounded awful. After $2,000.00 of exhaust mods, it didn't sound much better. I have had 2 neighbors stop me and and comment my 17 (stock) exhaust sounds amazing. I don't plan to modify it other than add headers once the warranty runs out but even that isn't simple with the ECM's in this car. I also don't want to increase the drone. In Sport mode at freeway speed, it's already high. So since you have 2.75" active exhaust, I would say leave it.

 

I appreciate that! I’ve been fighting back and forth with it. Because it does sound great in sport and track just wish the active exhaust was always open. But thanks again I’ll look into headers like you said once the warranty runs out.!

 

Have you looked into exhaust valve deletes? A lot of scat packs owners use them. Easy fix. Ive also heard that you can actually lose power when messing with the factory exhaust. The 392 is a beautiful sounding engine all on its own!! At least imo

I'm all for doing what ya like. For me, the I LOVE the stock sound - kinda "watch out, beware" at idle, and ROARING at acceleration. For me, I can't imagine it being any more enjoyable if it were any louder. But God bless America and our freedom, so do what will make ya happy. I can also understand the attraction of a absolute monster exhaust tone in a proper muscle car.

I'm not too schooled in engine systems, but also, is there any potential performance alteration to consider, if back pressure is reduced to the OE system?

I have yet to hear a mid muffler delete that sounded good on these new Hemi's. It's a cheap mod and is louder, but not better IMO.

Hmmm, depends mostly about what you can live with long term. Muffler delete is a big step. Myself on my 2020 Scat Pak I replaced the mid mufflers with the Dynomax mini bullets and kept the resonators. Unable to go to new tips because of the resonator end would interfear per local muffler expert . Now about the sound, quiet at cruise. But even in auto mode when I floor the gas the snarl is WOW ! Cold starts are very LOUD. Soooo I'm at the sweet spot, no drone but all hell break loose when the 392 speaks !

 

How could you have no drone? My 17 with stock exhaust has plenty of drone in sport mode.

 

Replace the mid mufflers with Race bullets. Dynomax and Vibrant both make race bullet mufflers and they are fairly inexpensive. About $50-$100 for a set.

I seldom use the sport mode as the Scat Pak has plenty of power. However no drone from the 392 at cruise with or without cruise control.

 

My drone also is greatly reduced if I don't use Sport mode but I don't like running on 4 cylinders.

 

I paid $26. each for the Dynomax race bullets on Amazon. The cost to remove OEM mufflers and weld in bullets was $150.

 

Where did you go? I got quoted 300 😂😂😂😂 I have the dynomax bullets as well. Also, what do you mean when you say the resonator tips would affect the mod?

 

I have the 2020 Challenger R/T ScatPak as well. I did not think it was loud enough at first but after about 5000 Kms (3100 miles) it got louder on its own. Now after being to the track 3 times it is much louder and sounds great. I don't know if anyone else has had this experience but when I start it up in the morning the house shakes and my coworkers say they can hear me coming a mile away. Just my experience as I was thinking of the mid muffler delete too but I am very happy with mine as is now.

 

I’m right at 2500miles and it has seems to get louder. Cold starts sound great too! I’ve yet to get to the track but looking forward to it

 

i have had the mids removed. originally, at 2800 miles, at start up, according to the sound meter on my phone, it was 102 dbls. after the mids were removed, sound meter, pegged at 114. drone is pretty much what you can get used to. always drove cars with full headers, open exhaust, etc etc etc. owned harleys with no baffles, sport bikes with race exhaust, so i am used to it. at 75, with cruise on, windows closed, i can listen to my stock radio at 6 at it isn't intrusive. now, that being said, my ex hated how loud it was stock, afterwards, she didn't want to drive in it. and, as for neighbors, except for the nice older couple at the beginning of the cul de sac, i don't care about the other 4 homes. but, my dogs know when i am coming home from three blocks away. if i were to do it again, i would replace the stock resonators with bullets, so i could add quad exhausts and remove the mids. but thats just my opinion. it all boils down to how loud you like your car.

When you say "replace the stock resonators with bullets", I think mufflers and resonators are two different animals. Resonators are designed to reduce the frequency that produces drone (or produce a frequency that cancels out the drone frequency) while mufflers are designed to reduce db. Right?

 

The Resonator is installed to resonate the sound before it goes to the muffler. What I don't understand is why the rear mufflers "attached to the exhaust tips" are being called resonators because in the exhaust system for a vehicle the resonator comes before the muffler, sometimes known as a pre-muffler because it is installed in the exhaust system after the catalytic converter and before the muffler.

 

Thought about it on my '19 T/A but I feel it's loud enough as do my neighbors...so I'll leave it stock...maybe when my hearing diminishes I'll turn up the volume...

 

I did the mid-muffler delete and installed the Dynomax Race bullets on my T/A with 392. I don't regret that decision at all. The sound quality is improved without being overly loud or obnoxious. It has a nice even tone at highway or cruising speeds. And frankly, I don't notice any particular drone since installing the race bullets. In my opinion, this is one of the cheapest and easiest mods to make to wake up your Challenger a little bit. I say go this route before committing to the high cost of a full cat-back exhaust system.

 

madhatters in pompano did my mids and they charged me $125. shop around. i always looked for what type of cars were in the lot waiting for service. if it was your grandmas buick electra, pass.....madhatters had about a dozen challengers, camaros, mustangs, a gtr and a lambo waiting for exhaust work. figured those were the guys. all professional and clean. just my two cents.

 

I removed the mid muffler on mine and replaced then with Vibrant 1794. Rear resonator/muffler is still on it. Came out perfect in my opinion. No interior drone, not raspy, but gave it that more aggressive tone.

How can anyone say there is no drone after changing mufflers. My Challenger stock has drone.
